over on the mastodons, there is a thread about half life 1, vr, and floating point precision and it is wilder than you might expect

This thread does a better job of capturing why the cloud isn’t merely “renting a bunch of servers” than anything else I’ve seen recently.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

✨ Big O ✨

Let me take you on a visual introduction to what big O notation is in my new blog post: samwho.dev/big-o.

With big O notation you can better understand how algorithms will perform in practice, finding orders of magnitude improvements often with very simple changes to your code.

The positive thing about AI tooling going mainstream and setting expectations high (e.g. "anyone can build software with AI") is that a large group will learn what us devs know already:

Creating good software is hard and it's hard to explain to outsiders in a way they understand

Any old thing will do. Small joys are as good as big ones—sometimes even better.

CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open.
DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open.
CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are.
DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

Boo fucking hoo. It's built on THEFT. "I don't know how I'd ask all those people or afford to pay for all their work." Then you DON'T GET TO HAVE IT. These would-be geniuses have convinced themselves that something in their miracle blah-blah machine is so inherently amazing rules don't apply.
“I just don’t know how you go around, asking everyone first. I just don’t see how that would work,” Clegg said. “And by the way if you did it in Britain and no one else did it, you would basically kill the AI industry in this country overnight.”
Nick Clegg says asking artists for use permission would ‘kill’ the AI industry

Add /rss at the end of your profile URL to get to the feed, so for me: bsky.app/profile/puf... (note: it redirects to a less readable URL).

Or simply search for the profile URL in your feed reader.

Shopify have asked us to repost issues from GitHub onto their community forum.

Having to go through the 40+ issues I have with them and seeing how few of them have been resolved makes me really sad 😢

I wish their Extensions feature was better. So many frustrating flaws. It could be so good!

My GPU has 45 billion transistors in it.

Like, we have this magic rock that we carved 45,000,000,000 miniature switches on it to create images of worlds that do not exist on a screen.

We really, really not appreciate enough how insanely magical technology is.

Definitely suggesting this for our team!
We've got a new game at work "Cold Case Mysteries" where people submit a picture of their fridge and then we all guess who it is.

I thought this would be funny but did not anticipate a character assassination.
