He has always been the author of his own legend, and too much of the media for decades have helped him launder those fictions.
Elon Musk promised a lot of things by 2025

- colonists arriving on Mars
- xAI achieving AGI
- Tesla robotaxis serving half the U.S.
- completely driverless robotaxis
- a Tesla Roadster demo
- DOGE cutting trillions

none of them happened

Everything Elon Musk promised in 2025, but didn't deliver
Musk is now infamous for his false promises, but even this is excessive.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

“They promise the pleasures of society without the risk of being with others …solipsism masquerading as interaction. That, surely, is the root of AI companions’ creepiness. It is also why they must fail.”
“Companions without internal lives of their own — ‘happy slaves’ — and friendship without friction cannot address solipsism, only flatter us into believing our self-absorption is something else.”
Why your AI companion is not your friend
First, tech companies usurped the meaning of ‘friends’ and ‘connection’ — now they are coming for ‘companionship’

For a Student Who Used AI to Write a Paper

“… it steals our content, guzzles our water, increases our power bills, is crammed into services we didn’t ask for it to be crammed into while also charging us more money for the “privilege.” There is no strategy here except to find the fields where the AI grows and metaphorically set them aflame.”
Apparently I'm doing this -- my open letter to that open latter about AI in writing and publishing. I emerged from Hibernation Week to write it, so god only knows how much sense it makes. But at least a human wrote it, so that's nice.

Bonus: picture of my "cat," sweet baby Boomba.

Bernie Sanders: "We need to be thinking seriously about a moratorium on data centers. You gotta slow this process down. It's not good enough for the oligarchs to tell us 'you adapt.' Are they gonna guarantee healthcare to all people? What are they gonna do when there are no jobs? Make housing free?"

It’s kind of mind-blowing that non-fiction books aren’t fact checked
Over and over during this episode, and over many If Books Could Kill episodes, my main thought was imagine how much chaos we could have avoided if only publishers had independent fact checkers.
Episode 48: Elon Musk, Part 2

Over the course of several years, the richest man in the world lost his mind. His biographer didn’t seem to notice.

This goes out to my family who thinks AI is cute …
"'Please don’t leave the noose out,' ChatGPT replied, according to the lawsuit. 'Let’s make this space the first place where someone actually sees you,' it added, appearing to suggest that no one in Adam’s life had understood him except for the chatbot."

Stephen Miller’s ancestors were Jewish refugees from the pogroms in czarist Russia. They came to the U.S. in the early twentieth century, even as racists said this same stuff about them.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

This outstanding piece focuses on Miller's maternal roots.
But let's not forget that genealogist Renee Steinig discovered that Miller had a paternal ancestor whose naturalization petition was denied on grounds of "ignorance."

Thanks for sharing this document, @rweingarten.bsky.social.

I read it, and I believe it's inexcusably inadequate and will not prepare teachers or schools to confront the very real dangers of the "A.i." products pushed by your partners, including OpenAI.

A few thoughts for your consideration...

At the risk of pointing out what should be obvious, antisemitism looks like chanting "Jews shall not replace us!," accusations of dual loyalty, Sieg Heils at political events, the recent Bondi Beach shooting, and things along those lines, not like celebrating Hanukkah with Mandy Patinkin and family.
It was such a joy to celebrate Hanukkah with Mandy, Kathryn and their son, Gideon. As Jewish New Yorkers across our city prepare to light candles and mark the seventh night today, I wish you and your families a Hanukkah full of light and love.
