from the perspective of Venezuelans, I suppose last night's military operation doesn't really look very different from Grenada in 1983, Panama in 1989, or countless other US military actions

what makes this feel different from vantage points outside of Latin America is that the US is no longer

If you don't think kidnapping Maduro matters because he's a "bad guy" then you don't get to complain about January 6th, because they thought we were the "bad guys".

Imagine being the person brave enough to leak this in the hopes that media attention could stop it and then the media just……buries it.
NEW: Plans for secret U.S. raid to capture Maduro leaked to the Washington Post and New York Times before it happened, but both decided not to publish to protect U.S. troops - Semafor

Call your Senators and your Congressperson. Tell them EXACTLY how you feel about what our military and the executive branch are doing in Venezuela.
Do it! Make sure their offices are flooded with calls, whether you have a Rep or Dem rep. It's the weekend and you can leave a message!
You know what to do folks, flood the phones: indivisible.org/resource/cal...

👇🏼 This might be the winner for the worst response by a Democratic Senator.
President Trump’s actions today with Venezuela raise more questions than answers. Is America going to be involved in running and stabilizing Venezuela? Today's actions raise many questions about the stability of the region and our policy towards South America.

We’ve seen this playbook before in Haiti, only we don’t have oil so there is never any talk of running the country after the US kidnaps a Haitian president.

I do not understand how anyone other than the Trump administration is assuming "the US has taken over Venezuela" (let alone "restored democracy") when THE VENEZUELAN GOVERNMENT IS STILL CURRENTLY IN POWER AND DEFIANT.

It's the damn Saddam Hussein statue toppling all over again. People are so dumb.

As we approach the start of a new semester, I thought this a timely moment to think about how you can design in-class, small-team learning activities to maximize engagement and accountability. 🧵
I’ve been a university-level teacher for over 30 years. Part of that work is observing and mentoring new and experienced teachers. One lesson I’ve learned? Small-team tasks are where good teaching goes to die. A thread on how to make small-team tasks work in the classroom. 🧵 1/38

Trump's chief contribution to American politics is revealing that you don't need a respectable veneer for evil, corrupt behavior. You can rob the bank, say you did it because you like money and you'll do it again, and challenge anyone to stop you
I feel like I haven’t even been properly lied to about the purposes of this war

Also does he think this is going to make Venezuelans more enthusiastic about the invasion and occupation?

Cuz Iraqis LOVED IT when we invaded to “free them from Saddam.”

And these 🤬 hate history books… but it’s other people who are going to be at risk of dying.
Is someone going to invade the US, kidnap our president, and have him faced criminal charges abroad?

Cuz I’m watching the news and… 😶

The Times has been a cheerleader for American occupations in the past, including of Haiti.

But hey, at least they know the word to use, unlike a lot of the media.
Veteran New York Times national security reporter David Sanger says what Trump is describing in Venezuela is an "American occupation."

Back to my talk: here's slide for y'all from the Best Doc Oscar 🏆 for 1943, Moscow Fights Back, when the US joined Russia in fighting against fascism. 🗃️📽️

As Alexei Tolstoy said: "Humanity has suffered severe trials during the past year....The only effective defense [against fascism] is attack."
