This murder by ICE is horrific and expected, and their violence will continue accelerating because everything from their (minimal) training to their orders prioritizes aggression without any regard to humanity. Get them off the streets and start prosecuting them.

Marya (an incredible advocate for women making films) gets at the heart of things in this thread, as it’s even more frustrating than the headline. There are so many talented female directors out there pushing hard to make indies, but they aren’t given the same shot at the big leagues.
It's important to note that this means that only 8% of the top 100 GROSSING films are directed by women. It doesn't mean that 92% of all films are directed by men. It means the films by women are not making as much money. But the directors are there and making films.
The annual study had some blistering conclusions and observations this year, as Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate did not hire a single woman director for films included in the study in 2025.

I only met James Ransone briefly, at the Spirit Awards where he was part of the Altman Award winning ensemble for Sean Baker's Starlet. His joy struck me, as he often portrayed such complex figures struggling with darkness. It's heartbreaking to think of his own life in those terms. Rest in peace.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.

Love the Sundance 2026 titles, and as ever I'm particularly fond of the Episodic section I help craft! Some recognizable names (Riz Ahmed, Jim Cummings, Nicole Holofcener), plus great emerging talent: Turner Brothers, Stacey Lee, Alec Goldberg & Camille Wormser!

I am so genuinely proud of our list of independent film nominees for this year's Spirit Awards; I wish people could know the integrity and passion that our nominating committees approach these selections with, but that anonymity is part of why it's so special. www.vulture.com/article/inde...

The depth of the shame of a country this wealthy and abundant allowing its people to go hungry is impossible to measure. The fact that a handful of people could fix this by paying their fair share of taxes while still remaining obscenely wealthy makes it even worse.

It is very hard for me to take in characters doing distinctive accents without (poorly) mimicking them, so the fact that I didn't do this whole podcast trying to replicate Meryl Streep's Bronx nun voice is a personal achievement. Amy Adams holds her own, which was my goal with Dane and Louis.
Today we’re talking about the 2008 drama Doubt with special guest @dreaclark.bsky.social.

Plus: the horror of Dutch angles, the moment Amy became offer-only, and Kirk Douglas shilling for Casa Zeta-Jones.
