This post is long because I went through a lot this year, from publishing a book to losing my Dad, and everything in between.
✨ A Look Back at 2025 in Writing, Appearances, Trauma, and Joy.✨
This year was a lot.

In this week’s guide: the new historical musical drama by Mona Fastvold, my fave film by Jane Campion, the shorts of Mary Stephen, my fave stop motion short by Niki Lindroth von Bahr, underseen films by Susan Seidelman & Patricia Rozema, and a video installation by Larissa Sansour and Youmna Chlala.
Everything gets ordinary, eventually.

1. Headlines everywhere today read "Grok apologizes."

This is bullshit. A chatbot is not something that can apologize.

Pretending otherwise is simple laundering these companies' bullshit about what AI is, while diffusing blame away from the human beings that developed and released this system.

Excellent thread
It's important to note that this means that only 8% of the top 100 GROSSING films are directed by women. It doesn't mean that 92% of all films are directed by men. It means the films by women are not making as much money. But the directors are there and making films.
The annual study had some blistering conclusions and observations this year, as Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and Lionsgate did not hire a single woman director for films included in the study in 2025.

Marya (an incredible advocate for women making films) gets at the heart of things in this thread, as it’s even more frustrating than the headline. There are so many talented female directors out there pushing hard to make indies, but they aren’t given the same shot at the big leagues.

Honestly I don’t feel bad for her. This has happened to almost every business that sold out to private equity over the last several decades. If she had wanted to secure her legacy, she shouldn’t have fallen for the big paycheck lie that PE sells.
