Beginning in 1970, @ncte.org has worked with members to pass position statements and resolutions about students' right to read and the ways teachers can oppose censorship. A little summer project is going to be reading through these statements and following the paths they open up.

The government wants to tell half of this country's states what it is they can read and what it is they can think.

They *want* public institutions of democracy and civic engagement to be mouthpieces of government beliefs. That's all.

Please, for the love of god, GIVE A SHIT.

Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."

A librarian who was given the directive has come forward asking for whistleblower protections.

There is something Orwellian in using the word "sunset" as a verb to describe cutting academic programs. Sunsets are beautiful, and one knows the sun will rise again. This is...not that.

It's the fear. The fear is the point.

It's not easy to denaturalize. But ... it's the fear of denaturalization & the chilling effect that results, including on freedom of speech & association, that is used as a tool of political repression.

#literacies folks, my institution is hiring for Fall 2026. Share widely. Very much an early reading position focused on STR/SoR. We're a very small program and teaching focused. Happy to connect before I'm told I'm on the hiring committee and HR tells me I can't talk to anyone.

So, what’s my next browser? Dropping Firefox.
Mozilla has a new CEO and he just announced that Firefox will evolve into a modern AI browser. Weekend #knitting. Entrelac with handspun alpaca. I’ve got two skeins, so planning for a large shawl.

I met the sweet creature, whose name is Nibbler because he nibbled everything—fingers, hems, zippers, hair. The yarn still has grass, but it’s soft as silk.

Censorship in K-12 schools is still very much a thing, even though the media isn't reporting on it.

Volume 2 takes up research on teachers' experiences.

It also includes interviews with recent @ncte.org Intellectual Freedom Award Winners including Laurie Halse Anderson & Nic Stone.
