I closed social media for like three hours and the Pope threw a rave, MTG resigned, and Trump endorsed Mamdani before Chuck Schumer did? Now accepting bribes to close social media for all of next week

A discussion sparked by a piece whose opening argument was that Larry Summers was the tragic, rational victim of a feminized woke mob
Never forget that just a week ago, Ross Douthat and the NYTimes were asking if women ruined the workplace.

This is actually good spin, or would have been. But the fact that the Democratic cave happened without even a coordinated, agreed-upon message like this indicates the depth of the leadership void.

this is about where I’m at

the level of incandescent rage at Dem leadership is as high as I’ve ever seen and it’s not the rage of a population that is ready to go “well, I wanted to fight Trump but Schumer sucks so I guess fascism it is”

but primaries are going to start looking a lot different
I think voters at large will very likely have trouble remembering details of chuck schumer selling out the aca by nov 2026. also I think in the next three months you're gonna see a lot of unlikely folks stopping by the dsa table at various no kings events

I could play it back to listen in on the whole conversation but I could also punch myself in the head with a sampling drill and I was not going to do that, either.

I just want everyone to have the experience of living in dignity with access to sufficient food, safe housing, needed medical care, high quality education, and time to engage with what sparks their curiosity and spirit

this should not be controversial 🫠

The most *generous* scenario here is that you can't control your caucus, in which case you are ineffective as minority leader and need to step down.
Democrats have been fighting for months to address America's healthcare crisis

For the millions who will lose coverage
For people with cancer who won't get the care they need
For working families who can't afford to pay $25K more a year for healthcare

We will keep fighting

I think a lot of the anger this morning stems from a feeling that we did our part, but they did not do theirs. This is an oversimplification, but my dudes, no wonder people are like, “OK, let’s try the democratic socialist, then.”

i am receptive to the idea that those things are simply too important to not have with no way out, especially this time of year, but also demonstrating to people who will take them hostage that you’ll fall in line if they raise the stakes high enough isn’t tenable either

i don’t play pundit and try to guess how stuff will play to voters whose politics generally make no sense to me, but if ending the shutdown was about the important business of getting SNAP benefits and air travel back online, it also rewards hostage taking in a way that seems pretty ominous to me

A leader would not have lost eight colleagues tonight. This happened because you let it happen or because you’ve totally lost control of the caucus in one of the most important moments since you’ve been Democratic leader. Either way, it’s on you. You need to step down. We need someone who can lead.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but you do not keep the government shut for more than a month and then NOT get a deal on the main item you have been messaging on without completely shifting the blame dynamic.
Major concession from Democrats here is enhanced ACA funds aren’t extended. Preserving them was Dems’ central demand in this fight. They secured a promise of a vote (which Thune has been offering for weeks), but that could still fail. Even if it passes, Johnson has made no promise of a House vote.
Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:

—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)
—Led by King/Shaheen/Hassan

If I have learnt a single thing from 8 years of arguments about The Last Jedi, it’s that George Lucas was absolutely right to just explicitly and clunkily spell out themes like “I knew there was more to you than money!” when the franchise started rather than trusting it was clear to the audience
(I know I’m screaming into the void on this but it doesn’t oeacenik, the “both sides are bad and the weapons manufacturers are the real villains” view is advocated by a *bad guy* whose views are explicitly rejected!)

pre-writing a devastating obituary for your enemy is god-tier hating of a kind you don’t often see anymore. renaissance haterism. beautiful stuff.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.

Okay, I just love watching agility.
