Norfolk-bred Scot, software engineer, passionate about maths, maps, better public transport, and xkcd references. Bluesky now my main source of witterings, with occasional drip-feed of migrated content such as maps I'm pleased with.
An all-too-rare example of a corporation being of the opinion of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"; and as a society we desperately need this attitude to be more mainstream (as opposed to "if it ain't broke, release a new version crammed with AI slop"). Credit to them. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

And yet I have a sinking feeling that if I looked into this again and tried to use a properly registered fitter, it would somehow come to the same £8000 + 12 month waiting list that it did 4-odd years ago
Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.

Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

Vital piece of investigative reporting from Sky. They've uncovered the X algorithm which feeds users extremist right wing material from the moment they join the site. It is a far-right radicalisation engine, by design.

Earlier today we published the Ringways Map, in collaboration with @maps.sabre-roads.org.uk. We are beyond excited to finally put it online - below is a thread explaining why it's so special, but to see it for yourself just follow the link: www.sabre-roads.org.uk/maps/index.p... 🧵

Phones are following the path laid down by cigarettes: 1. ooh, an expensive exotic novelty; 2. cigs are great, everyone should have them; 3. ah, they're making us sick; 4. ban them for kids; 4. no, restrict access for everyone; 5. no ads either. (We're currently at stage 3ish)

There is a Venn diagram of "topical Royal news" and "quirky public transport minutiae" and, wow, this hits it square in the bullseye.
Something I suspect Andrew will particularly miss is access to the handy once-a-day bus service to his front door.
(The number 1 is a fantastic little bus journey,
much of it on private roads through Windsor Great Park. I’ve never managed to get the 1A variant though…)

Dear tastecard,

What the actual ass is a "log-in journey"?!

If it's anything other than an opportunity to go white-water rafting through a timber-rich creek in the Canadian Rockies, kindly refrain from trying to make me excited about it.

Not surprised by this at all. I now have Very Specific and Very Strong preconceptions about anyone I see behind the wheel of a Tesla, in particular any Tesla with a 25 or 75 plate, because you have NO excuse. You *knew*, and you lined his filthy pockets anyway.
Wow!

"Without the Musk partisan effect, Tesla sales between October 2022 and April 2025 would have been 67-83% higher, equivalent to 1-1.26 million more vehicles. Musk’s partisan activities also increased the sales of other automakers' electric and hybrid vehicles 17-22%"

One of the reasons I love retro-SF futures is because they speak to this increasing trend of turning shit off and disconnecting devices. When AWS goes down and bricks your bed, fridge, and thermostat, the appeal of analog is keenly felt.

Oh wow. This is very cool.
Excellent news!
The Cowley branch line in Oxford will re-open to passengers.

I am glad the government sees the obvious benefit in this, but railways across the Midlands and North badly need ambitious investment.
It can't just be London and the South East.
