"The best way to protect our First Amendment rights is to keep using them."
On October 18, millions of people across the country took to the streets to send a message: Our democracy belongs to We the people.

The best way to protect our First Amendment rights is to keep using them.
Seven Million People Unite at Peaceful No Kings Protests to Defend Our First Amendment Rights | ACLU
ACLU Justice Division leader Ellen Flenniken saw people across the country come together to stand up for free speech, protest peacefully, and show that our power grows when we act as one.

"Subtle cues" fail again. This is a classic American woonerf or shared street where the architect thinks paving variation, unobtrusive street furniture, and an "implied curb" are enough to protect pedestrian space from encroachment by cars.

All of that stuff is outsourced to volunteers who have no accountability so no wonder it gets shaped by bad faith actors

People somewhat reasonably assume that the rules governing our built environments are built on careful assessment of the best available science and rigorous analysis of tradeoffs but in reality it's like 85% vibes.

A preliminary injunction hearing may follow later this month and the facts on the ground matter.

If a right wing influencer with a camera is trying to goad you into a fight, there is a reason for that, and the reason is we could lose our legal standing to stop the feds from coming in.

Reminder to please call the governor and ask him to sign SB 79
Probably dumb as hell to publish this on a Friday afternoon, but the clock is ticking to get @gavinnewsom.bsky.social to sign SB 79. Please share — and, if you're a Californian, please call the governor's office at (916) 445-2841 to ask for his signature. publiccomment.blog/p/newsom-s-f...

This is why the Charles Marohn, "gentle density" approach is bullshit and doomed to failure.

The NIMBYs will tell you that they just want gradual densification, *but they are lying to you!*
Not a joke, apparently: this NIMBY campaign page in Milwaukee talks about a 4-storey building as being “out of scale” with surrounding 3-storey buildings.

But they’re not against development, just this one.

Portland, now’s the time to support Inner East Side for All! Supported by portland Neighbors Welcome, Strong Towns and Bike Loud and more!
NYT released a new tool showing how blue states thanks to the housing shortage will lose their congressional seats to red states and eliminate whats left of "the blue wall." Therefore, Im making this post free. The issue is too important not to understand, especially as SB 79 comes up to vote soon.
With the upcoming gerrymandering war, it's pretty clear that blue states who refused to build housing because it was turning red states purple just shot themselves in the foot big time.

This will take some strong-minded governors! Pritzker? Newsom? (wasn't NG federalized over his objections?) Hochul?
So, has Pritzker ensured that he has constitutional loyalists leading the national guard, who are prepared and willing to refuse an order to federalize?

Like, every Dem Governor needs to purge their national guard leadership of anyone they aren't confident would refuse an order to federalize.
Donald Trump is attempting to manufacture a crisis, politicize Americans who serve in uniform, and continue abusing his power to distract from the pain he's causing families.

We'll continue to follow the law, stand up for the sovereignty of our state, and protect Illinoisans.

I wonder if this would fit in Portland’s CM-2 zone, or even RM-2, both of which are today almost exclusively mapped on Arterials?
This building, legal citywide in Spokane Washington, is illegal to build in 75% of Seattle even with its new citywide zoning plan
With the Manito Six in Spokane, we have proof of concept that stacked flats are viable to develop, give residents a wonderful quality of living, and fit nicely in established neighborhoods. Contact me about bringing stacked flat/middle housing to your neighborhood!

“Quislings”!
Yup, any Dem committed to fighting fascism needs to fight the quisling political desks of every legacy media institution. They shouldn’t be shy about it. Shrink their audience to only reactionary centrists, and get them out of the way. They do more harm than good.

Finally, a short clip on the HAWK signal, which was never explained to drivers in Portland. As the video elucidates, each one of the phases is counter to how most signals work. AFAIK, they're used as they're cheaper than a full signal, facing both streets. www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-5A...

Tree advocates don’t care about orcas or emissions. They are trying to stop housing. The sooner everyone realizes how NIMBYs launder their public comments the sooner we can move on to building productive housing reform.

This kid is 15, and so has a moral clarity and uprightness that no adult elected official would or could ever have. There aren't really and never have been two sides of this issue, but if it has to be argued as a binary thing I don't see how anything less than this could seem like the side to be on.
