we have a large solar installation but I refuse to put in batteries given their high pricing relative to car batteries, instead I'm betting on bidirectional charging letting me use the car battery for house backup in the next few years

Early-gen #EV owners — Leaf & Tesla Model S (Gen 1 = 2011–2016) — skew the EV conversation. Those cars had small packs, weak cooling and higher degradation. Modern EVs don’t share those failure modes. Battery replacements have plunged 8.5% → 2% → 0.3%. Different tech, different era. Stop comparing.
The Facts Are In: You Shouldn't Worry About EV Battery Replacements
New research shows that it's extremely uncommon to have to replace a modern electric car's battery.

With ~$50B of batteries we can accommodate all of the load growth in the USA through 2030. But they have to be placed in the right places on the distribution grid. So think less 100 MW single deployments and more 3-8MW distributed deployments and behind the meter batteries at homes and businesses.
