anyway ludicrous to think the right question is “how did DHS lose its way??” and not “why did we build a domestic security super agency in the first place, and who has that power served”

We live in a country where it's impossible to tell how many "gun cleaning accidents" are actual accidents.

Don't shop at Home Depot. Got it.
Just learned that my pastor, the sweetest human I ever met, led a vigil protesting Home Depot's open-doors-to-ICE policy on Dia de Muertos, and the Home Depot they were protesting shut their heavy steel security doors to the harmless clergy, something they do not do to actual ICE.

JD Vance owns a company that buys American real estate and sells it to foreign investors. They specifically target Americans in crisis to buy their property for less than it is worth.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

because of this, it is not actually reasonable to hold people to the standard of "everything they demand from their leaders needs to make political sense"

I don't agree that Chuck Schumer could have done anything to keep the shutdown going longer, but I don't blame people who are mad

I know Americans are angry, and for good reason, but I feel a bit sorry for the sellouts. Like, the Nazis are streaming across your border in their panzers, and in front of them, your last critical line of defence. Eight hamsters in little helmets, toothpicks taped to their paws. OOOH, hamster down!

If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Apparently some folks are playing real dumb about skull symbols so let’s play a little game I like to call “Nazi skull or not a Nazi skull”

First up, the Jolly Roger. This is a pirate skull, not a Nazi skull. It means you might get robbed, but prolly not genocided.

With me so far? 1/x

Democratic party leadership has been on autopilot for ten years, they weren't losing to fascism, fascism isn't popular enough for them to lose to fascism, they were allowing it to fill the void where their leadership should have been. Tonight we're seeing that we have other options. They should too.

This is why Chuck has NO REASON to come back to the table. Let them twist. If you're coming back with wins this big during a shutdown, the people know where their bread is buttered. Don't throw them a lifeline. These aren't tiny margin wins. They're blowouts.

Hey, @nytimes.com How about instead of another Iowa diner interview, how about you seek out these parents and see how REAL Americans feel about their neighborhoods being invaded by paramilitary thugs without their consent? Ask them now they feel about their kids being tear gassed!

i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this

I've been seeing quite a few MAGA edgelord accounts today.

Friendly reminder:

Block immediately, and do not engage.

I know they're not having as much fun on twitter with so many of us here, but it's not our job to pet them and feed them little treats of attention.

Do not engage.

The fact that funding military payroll for which appropriations had lapsed was done for the first time ever on *Saturday* and it’s already just covered as “Pentagon-style money shifting” is so so bad.

All of this, in violation of the Constitution.
Trump and Vought are now breaking both sides of spending law. They’re illegally not spending where the law requires them to spend, and they’re illegally spending where they don’t have the money to spend.

What we have is an appropriations king.

Spending “deals” are meaningless under that setup.
