this is a small thing but it would be nice to feel good about paying taxes. i would like to write a check to the government and think about kids going to school and freshly paved roads not all the death squads my income helps fund.

having lived in fairly diverse places my whole life, ever since Trump won I do sometimes take in a street or a room or a conversation and suddenly get emotional about the fact that there is a powerful and organized movement backed by state power trying to rip this away from me
Look I know that “diversity is our strength” is cringe but: diversity is our strength. People who come from distinct cultural practices actively serving in community with one another. What a blessing to live in a world where that happens.
The thing about all these people they hate — the Somalis, the Haitians — are some of the most generous people you’ve ever met. Whose cultures are predicated on hospitality, whose kindness is entirely unmatched.

The thing about "they don't think there will be consequences" is that it may be true but only in the empty sense that they don't really think. I doubt most of these people can project themselves even a month into the future let alone optimize using some sort of game theoretic backwards induction.
