the first time in history this shit has happened. first time and it's on camera. what a privilege

This year I wrote and released a set of methodologies for measuring the greenhouse gas emissions of videogame making, distributing, playing, etc. (with a lot of help and input)

I think they’re pretty neat and provide new pathways to reduce those emissions

Reading & writing has kept me alive this year.

Somehow, it’s been my most productive year as an author.

Here’s a guide to what I’ve published in 2025, in case you’ve lost track.

Individual links below but it’s all on itch: danifinn.itch.io

Heard there are new folk on Blue sky.
If I was Mr Nintendo I'd make Pikmin Innerspace.
Honey I shrunk the Olimar.
Play as Olimar but you get shrunk down even more and trapped in a full size Mario just living his life.
You have to use little pikmario to find pieces of the now damaged re enlarging mechanism lost all over Mario's insides.

How we did it on PS2.
Need to try and rebuild some old vert pipelines in blender (said for the thousandth time with no real projects needing it)
AO in geometry nodes with no shaders/baking textures?

geoNodesAO available for free: spaghetmenot.gumroad.com/l/geonodesao
(now with better asset library integration)

Go forth and occlude ambient light directly on verts! ☂️

I prefer my violent justice to be dealt out in a more organic farm to table way.
I can't enjoy as wholesomely when I know the fuckwit just made a boat load of cash from it all.

Tried to dig a hole.
Hole had rock in it.
Rock seems flat and not hollow.
Will come back to it tomorrow, too hot now.

My version of "this pixel-art was made to be seen on a CRT" are comics that were designed to be printed on shitty newsprint with warm-whites, shallow-blacks, and washed-out colors. Slickly-reprinted trades lack a certain "punk" verisimilitude.

While the CEO searches the room for a sharp implement get the fuck out, jump through the window anything.
Don't look back, leg it down the block, tip some trash can over as you go.
if you’re not an artist with experience in studio environments it might be hard to appreciate just how much genAI feels like a conman claiming to have made a gun that kills artists and every ceo lunging for it and pulling the trigger a few times

learning the gun doesn’t really work isn’t a comfort

Keep thinking about this term "pre-digested" that Kojima used to describe art that's instantly gratifying. And how it's better when people grow to love something instead.

I've gravitated, as player and designer, toward the latter, but that term "pre-digested" is new and feels very strong.

I'm looking for concept artists or illustrators working in gamedev who would like to share thoughts or comments (anonymous or attributed) regarding the use of GenAI as a reference tool in their process.

If that's you, DM or email me! Details in bio.

The act of gathering reference is such a deeper thing than just a fucking collage.

It's research, learning, assessing and building on your knowledge base.
Even google image search is dog shit for this, crack a fucking book.

Learning names, history, influences.

Great break down on the Princess Bride duel.
My Sword Master's Sword Master was Bob Anderson or 'Feathers' who choreographed this duel.
When I was fencing and learning choreography I had to learn this sequence and how to notate it, I had such greater appreciation the entire scene.
Great stuff.
As you may know, I have stopped using Twitter, and have decided to reproduce some of my more memorable threads here for posterity. Here’s one I hold wrote after a particularly engaging swordfighting lesson.

Buckle up, swordfighting fans, because I *have* studied my Agrippa!

AI imagery is the equivalent of Plato’s prisoner being bored of sunlight, clambering down into a cave, shackling himself to a rock to watch shadows cast by firelight and forgetting that the world above exists.
this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

Deeply disappointed to hear that the BBC has pushed out one of the most brilliant presenters in all of science communication for speaking with integrity and honor in support of human rights and dignity.
Very sad that I felt I had no choice but to resign from The Infinite Monkey Cage - a victory for the transphobes and other bigots - I did it because so much of the media has chosen to believe the kind and empathetic people are a fiction - they are real and so often unrepresented.

After LttP it feels like we stopped seeing illustrations like these, where the mystery and danger of the world was the focus. The artwork became much more character-driven. Seems to line up with the series' shift in design and perhaps general trends. (Unsurprisingly, I like the original games best!)
Such great cave exploration pieces in this one. The mood in them is awesome. I love how detailed the art is in the 2nd one.
