As ever, the letter-writers bring the wisdom.
We have a crisis of leadership at so many levels, and you only need to look at theocratic and repressive states to see that harsh, arbitrary rules and punishment do not make a society safe or harmonious.

"Now religious leaders are to be policed, universities monitored, the public broadcaster scrutinised and the arts starved."

ICYMI, Louise Adler's powerful piece.

Mainstream media pretended it was just about AF.
But she was warning of increasing #ZionistMcCarthyism.

Cancelling the Australian Palestinian author Randa Abdel-Fattah weakens freedom of speech and is the harbinger of a less free nation.

Before Zionists and their apologists subverted the language, 'cultural safety' was about addressing power imbalances formed through colonization.

Now it seems to mean upholding the rights of colonizers to continue their apartheid and genocide without criticism.
It's "culturally unsafe" to have a Palestinian Aus author advocate against the systematic slaughter of hundreds of thousands of her people, but it's
"a good thing" for the president of apartheid Israel, which has committed daily massacres and mass starvation for 2yrs, to visit us. Unbearably racist.

Excellent episode. The discussion of the Venezuelan opposition is great, including an observation I haven't seen elsewhere, that the domestic opposition has largely united in opposition to the war. The closing assessment of the overall course of Chavismo is very helpful

Let me see if I've got this right: a recent murderous attack means we should no longer let people speak against murderous attacks?

One tension in curating news from Iran is balancing a desire to support the efforts of people to overthrow an oppressive regime without inadvertently serving as a tool in operations to replace the regime with a puppet representing US/Israeli interests.

The people of Iran deserve self-determination.

Very well said @janecaro.bsky.social - I feel terrible for Louise Adler, who has been such a guiding voice for upholding humanity and the power of art to find common ground. What a terrible betrayal of the whole Festival by the Board

Stop deliberately killing people.
Stop deliberately hurting people.

ALL people.

No one should feel intimidated to say this and no one should be attacked for saying this.

Stop it. Enough. #auspol

Three million people live in Caracas, five million in the metro area. It's one of the densest cities in South America. Remember this in the morning when they try to spin this as anything other than a cold-blooded attack on a major civilian center.

You would think one fucking Very Serious Commentator would’ve realised this by now, but seems no
It would be practically and legally impossible to hold a royal commission that goes anywhere near the actions or motivations of the accused killer, before his criminal proceedings are concluded, which could take years. That limitation would render the royal commission itself pointlessly premature.

Having killed hundreds of aid workers, Israel is now completely banning 37 aid orgs from entering Gaza, including Doctors Without Borders, Save the Children, Oxfam, Caritas, and World Vision. This is an obvious war crime and thousands will die.
Any comment from our government?
'Simply unprecedented': Israel banning dozens of charities from Gaza
The Israeli government says the organisations have not met new requirements, which include recognising Israel as a Jewish and democratic state and banning any so-called "de-legitimisation" of Israel.
