Law, done differently.
This is Ley’s terminal step. She won’t come back from it.
I don't know where the Coalition are scoring their angry pills but they're getting ripped off. This cynical, performative grief and ham-fisted, rage-harvesting is embarrassing frankly. And it’s totally ick when so many Australians are in real shock and mourning. Grow the fuck up, guys. #auspol

The NSW parliament is about to pass a law empowering the police to prohibit all public assemblies in whatever area they specify, for 14 days when a terrorist incident has been declared (also by the police). Clearly unconstitutional, even if you accept a direct link between protests and terrorism.

Which was more likely to incite antisemitic violence: weekly pro-Palestinian marches attended by hundreds of thousands of citizens, or the televised devastation of Gaza? It's a fair question, but even asking it may soon be illegal.

"The evil that is in the world always comes of ignorance, and good intentions may do as much harm as malevolence, if they lack understanding." - Albert Camus, The Plague

We have seen both on full display this week.

This is a terrible mistake, borne of laziness and cowardice, and will be one of Anthony Albanese's longest lasting and most destructive legacies.

Considering how we teach the Holocaust is one thing; entrenching pro-Israel ideology in our education system is a whole other thing.

One can say many things about the idea of prohibiting protests during a "terrorist incident", but the words "martial law" and "unconstitutional" spring immediately to mind.

The Bondi victims are already fading into the background, collateral of a bigger war
The families of the Bondi victims haven't even had the chance to mourn or bury them, yet blame and demands from all sides have flown thick and fast.

Opinion | We still don’t even know all the Bondi victims' names, yet they already are fading into the background, collateral in an apparently far more important war, @marquelawyers.com.au writes.

The government had intended to simply ignore Segal's "plan" instead of binning it, and now it's cornered by its own failure to be upfront about the reality that her plan was really just a lobbyist's wish list.

Now we live in a city that has experienced a racially targeted mass-casualty terror attack. There is a pervasive sadness and sense of something lost. The fall-out so far has been predictable and depressing. We'd prefer the focus to be on grief and reflection, not blame, but that's not how it goes.

We support gun laws, don’t understand why anyone in a city needs guns or why anyone anywhere needs lots of guns. If you’re pro-gun you’re pro-killing things and therefore you’re a weirdo.

Going down the Scott road is a very bad idea if you don't want the voters to end up hating you, but Albo's inclination for secrecy and dislike of being questioned are tempting him that way

Prohibition has never previously worked as a policy for getting people to not consume something they want, but fortunately the social media ban will buck this trend by virtue of its careful evidence-based design and Albo's friendly reassuring smile every time he fails to answer the question.
