My radicalized perspective is that if the US can force ByteDance to divest/shutter TikTok in the US, the EU can do the same for Azure/AWS cloud data centers under the same logic
fundamentally i even get why the european union doesn't want giant american multinationals running their entire internet, especially now
Post a perfect album from the 1990s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Alice in Chains (lol btw)

Essentially, I think that LLM-generated dialogue only makes sense if you believe that the product of writing is words.

But the product of writing isn't words, any more than the product of justice is prisoners, or the product of love is weddings. The product of writing is meaning.

To be clear, yes, I am suggesting that if you buy generative AI as a panacea tech solution, you're probably also the sort of person who bought Dr. Clive's Guaranteed Spirit-Cleansing Tonic or who snorts ground up rhino horn to get a bigger, harder boner
Forget tech, marketing slop is older than money. Cavemen were almost certainly running around trying to trade magic bones and claws and shit
Hoverboards are the future, segways are the future, betamax, laser disc, Google glass is the future, 3d tvs are the future, curved screens are the future.

Like do we have to traipse through the whole graveyard of tech to get these people to understand just becauae you say it doesn't make it true.

Jesus fucking christ it's like everyone in the White Western World has a boner for abusing this unquestionably awful massacre to be able to go back to not having to oppose Israel and not having to care about brown people getting massacred

I have very few remaining commercial connections to the US and every single one of them is brain-scorchingly idiotic to try to navigate. Shithole country completely taken over by craven predatory filth

No one should accept this merger. Let their partners go to zero on their equity interest. Fuck 'em.
A storied Wall Street law firm that hemorrhaged talent after bending the knee to President Donald Trump has announced plans to merge with a much larger firm in a bid to save its practice.

Everyone involved in this decision and its execution should be [Terms of Service]ed

I am not exaggerating for effect
Woman comes to US at age 6. Graduates nursing school. Work permit. No criminal record. Snatched and imprisoned by ICE for 6 months now. About to be forced back to Honduras. A life destroyed and one less nurse. Merry Christmas.

D-Day for Europe to shore up Ukraine funding.

As EU leaders huddle in Brussels, Stephen Paduano and I analyse the reparations loan in a new piece.

This is not only a "There Is No Alternative" (TINA) moment—but the financial and legal risks are also manageable.

The Ukraine Reparations Loan: How to fix Europe's financial plumbing
As US support for Ukraine vanishes, Europe must overcome Belgian opposition and improvise fiscally to provide Kyiv with €210 billion.

The European Union has triggered Article 122 to indefinitely immobilise the assets of the Russian Central Bank, worth a whopping €210 billion.

I explain what just happened and why this is such a big deal for Europeans.

My issue with social media bans isn't so much about banning this for kids but about two things: (1) identifying kids online, which exposes them to more targeting risk, and (2) these algorithms are just as bad for adults who themselves have no capacity to discern truth from propaganda
Australia's ban on under-16s on social media is well on its way to becoming the global norm. I wrote about how platforms lost the argument www.platformer.news/australia-so...

Again, I don't know why this is so clear to American expats and not European leaders, but the US is ready to eat the EU's lunch - and dinner - and we're paying them for the privilege by buying all our tech from them.

Yes, Europe is strong. Europe needs to start fucking acting like it, instead of behaving like a bunch of sad professors afraid of tripping over the carpet
"Sometimes we doubt Europe’s power. But what I see is that there are so many people trying to undermine Europe, and I wonder, if Europe is not strong, why do so many people seek to undermine it? Because the truth is, we are strong."

The rule of thumb I have on this is that if it looks like consent (ie. voluntary, intentional act in furtherance of the primary goal of the data subject), but doesn't otherwise meet the conditions of GDPR consent, it's very likely a legitimate interest that also usually passes a balancing test.
Legitimate interest as a lawful basis for requiring the creation of user accounts on e-commerce websites

Is Germany (or the EU for that matter) even asserting their interests? Europeans seem unable to decide whether to run away from Trump or to suck him off
A whopping 65% of Germans say Germany is acting too cautiously in asserting its interests towards the United States.
