John Oliver has said this explicitly FYI

That without local news he couldn't do his show (and to his credit, he's pretty good about crediting his news sources)
When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

It took literally more than a year but a few months ago I was finally able to convince my editor that we should stop posting on X. He was worried there would be an outcry if we stoped.

There wasn’t. No one noticed because, thanks to the algorithm, no one was seeing our stuff there anymore anyway.

Blah okay you made me read it.

There are a constellation of things that it gets right, but setting it against the backdrop of MY's popularism and IMO insufficient urgency around climate, you end up with a rather uninspiring vision insufficient to the problem before us. The question...

I finally read the op ed. Matt Yglesias is right. (98% right at least, which is an A+ for a NYT op ed). Don't @ me. It's the holidays and I don't have the appetite. But Matty's position is pragmatic, substantively sound, and the only way we have a chance of making progress on climate in this moment.

The question is, given that we have an electorate that selected Trump yet again, can we in fact do better? If the answer is no, the future looks pretty bleak.

I'd like to see more effort on "How can we lead the people where we need to go" vs "What approach is inadequate enough to sell?"

Sir Terry Pratchett is best understood as one of the most interesting, deeply ethical practical (I would say Pragmatist but I cede to actual experts) philosophers of the late 20th Century who just happened to work in deconstructed fantasy literature as his medium.

Bari Weiss’ two accomplishments so far are hosting an interview that she desperately wanted people to watch (but they didn’t) and trying to spike a news story that she desperately wanted nobody to watch (but they did)

I have finished both seasons of A Man on the Inside.

This show is such a solid comfy watch, so well acted, with so many really good characters.

It's funny how us parochial Americans generally seem to perceive that the EV revolution is stalling or reversing when in fact it's accelerating rapidly worldwide. 25% of cars sold globally in 2025 were EVs!

She's moved quickly by vetoing more bills than usual. We moved quickly to round them up for you:
