I caught it from the air flying over you!

The one upside of 3 hours of delay in my flight today is being in the air when the northern lights lit up

A working families party capture by one family in my Town likely led to Dems not being able to gain town board seats. There is a story here about something shady going on, the primary was very weird here as well.

Hey #EnergySky, any idea why the 2023 LLNL Sankey diagram shows less solar/wind/hydro than the 2020 one?

Did they stop doing the fake primary energy equivalence lift?

Happy Halloween 👻🎃

Hosting a sleepover for my daughter's bday, which included pumpkin carving for the kids and tricker treating. Now they are starting to settle in downstairs.

Our local county legislator race. The Republicans are all out linking our Dem candidate to Mandani.

Don't threaten me with a good time.

Vote Emma Arnoff!

Fellow Energy Nerds, via @home-assistant.io I now have a personal Sanky diagram of my household energy usage.

This is glorious.

My Utility, Central Hudson, working hard to blame others for their rates: 42% delivery, 22% taxes, 36% supply.

When the reality is my bill split it actually: 75% delivery, 2% taxes, 23% supply.

500 @environmentalvoter.bsky.social postcards for the Georgia Public Service Commission race, ready to go in the mail tomorrow.

Many thanks to many helpers in getting the job done!

Last night we popped into NYC to see Beetlejuice on Broadway.

A short EV drive to the metro north train station. Trained in. 15 minute walk to the theater, and then back again. Lovely evening!

Want some joy in your life? The high school son of a friend of mine created this really fun card game around making sandwiches.

Launching a kickstarter soon

My critical stats for the house (thanks to @home-assistant.io ):

Outdoor temp, humidity, feels like. Rainfall, AQI.

Indoor temp. Furnace mode. Power consumption.

Battery levels and charging state of both EVs.

The next vaccine that I'm excited for is the Valneva Lyme Disease vaccine, which they likely will be applying for licence in 2026 after nearly a decade of development.

I am super impressed by the MTA app for metro north trains, which in addition to letting you purchase tickets has real time assessment of how full different cars are on it.

Wait, WAT?

How is it that builders in NY need to pay the gas companies whether or not they connect to the network? Surely there is a legislative fix to remove this, and also get their money back.

But when you think about on street parking, you'd ideally want position 2 or 3 (at least for the US) under the assumption the charger or electricity is basically in something like a parking meter.

Position 1 & 4 mean the cable has to go over or around the car, and sticks into traffic.
September 14, 2025 at 11:40 AM
For design reasons Tesla super chargers have very short cords, designed around that position 4 space. The cable will not reach to position 3.

Position 2 is geometrically compatible if you pull in forward instead of back, assuming the hood is short enough.
September 14, 2025 at 11:34 AM
There are basically 5 places you can put a charge port because of physical design, the corners and the front. Some example placements

1: Chevy Bolt
3: Kia/Hyundai Ionic X
4: Teslas
5: Nissan Leaf

(I haven't seen a lot of position #2, which is interesting)

I started thinking recently about EV charge port design, and it's a bit interesting, and unfortunately because of a poor decision by Tesla it's going to impact EV rollout in cities pretty badly.

First, thinking about the places EV car makers could and do place charge ports....
September 14, 2025 at 11:25 AM
It feels like a very Nissan thing to do. The old leaf needed 2 ports, because their Fast Charge port wasn't pin compatible with the J port (unlike CCS1).

That also made them put it directly in the front of the car.
September 14, 2025 at 11:03 AM
Nissan made an interesting choice with the new leaf. It has both a NACS charge port and a J charge port on different sides of the car.

The NACS port is in the front, but aligned to Tesla Super Chargers (you can be in the correct parking space w/ their short cords)

My New EV Hotness!
September 10, 2025 at 10:30 PM
My 2017 Bolt is officially dead (totaled by insurance). 93998 electric miles in. RIP little workhorse. May your battery cells find a new home in a grid storage array.

I have a new lease on a Kia EV6 in process, which I should get this week.
