Every Essex county councillor should be required to have their own children or grandchildren cycle along that "path" in the rain at night, and report back on how safe they felt. #deathstrip

Even if there had been a national ban, there would have been local discretion to allow pavement parking in places. However the presumption would have been that it was banned. DfT have made the presumption that pavement parking is allowed.

DfT press release on footway parking.

They've bottled a national ban and so will rely on local action with new powers (which are not explained, but area-based).

A postcode lottery as now then? I await actual details.

I was very disappointed to see no real detail on widening 20mph. Lots of further "consultation" to delay key issues they should've been delivering on. Nothing on pavement parking (we've already waited 5years for promised report!).

Commenting as Govt launch a road safety strategy.

Every death on our roads is unacceptable. We need a Vision Zero ethos: no deaths or serious injury. Change driving culture, reject speeding, use speed-limiting tech, strengthen sentences, end ‘accident’ language. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

The only target for the number of people killed on the road should be zero.

With its Road Safety Strategy, the Government has massively overlooked key actions to cut traffic and achieve safer and slower vehicle speeds, which are truly effective at saving lives and essential to reaching this goal.
The Road Safety Strategy is an opportunity to address the dangers pedestrians face every day, but the vision should be for zero people to lose their lives. We should not accept that a certain number of people will die on our roads.

"If Sadiq Khan thinks today that London is the greatest city in the world, then he's deluded," says Nigel Farage.

Suspect there may be one or two Londoners who, for all its faults, don't much like their city being talked down.

Wonder what percentage of people stuck in traffic in London don't have a vote for mayor.
Cunningham says that as mayor she will "end the war on motorists", saying: “For all you Londoners stuck in traffic, I will get London moving again."

In place of a war on motorists: a war on the laws of physics.

Just like his disastrous schemes as mayor of London: garden bridge 57 million supposedly costing Londoners nothing, the dodgy London Stadium deal he fought to keep secret, the cable car, bikes, buses, the Olympic scupture costing more in interest than the 12 millon it cost for literal scrap metal.

Road casualties are utterly normalised in political debate, but in England and Wales alone, on average around 80 people are killed or suffer injuries which could change their lives forever *every single day*. More should be done.

they actually make more profit on soft drinks, but once again it's useful idiots trying to find any excuse so drivers do not have to be responsible adults.
If you drink and drive then you're not responsible, you're a selfish wanker.

Sorry ... but you're still using that word, "accidents".

And it's a dangerous word - FAR too often used to exonerate the driver/s responsible?

And worse, it provides a sort of "cover", an "insulation" ... for the carelessly complacent driving behaviours we ALL know (and excuse/accept?).

Most collisions are not accidents, they are preventable.
Accidents are not limited to the older driver unfortunately.
