We watched Exhuma (2024) for our @allisfullofgore.bsky.social Sunday movie and it is a damn good horror movie that earns every second of its almost 2.5 hour runtime. A shamanic attempt to protect a family from a "grave calling" grandfather's ghost descends into something much, much darker.

I just watched The Terminator (for the first time!) and was struck by this, too.
I do like that in THE TERMINATOR, the future of humanity hinges, in a way, on storytelling--Kyle Reese's unfailing faith in, and love for, a woman from the past that he's never met, having been told stories of her heroism by her son. Sarah Connor sees that faith, and loves him for it.
Reading about AI being subverted by adversarial poetry and Russian drones' navigation systems jammed by Ukranian folk anthems, which suggests the opening future 'human rebels' scenes of Terminator may now have to be revised.

My progress in Thai has been very, very slow for about 6 months. I'm trying to be okay with that (I'm only spending 3 to 5 hours a week right now) but it is itchy and uncomfortable for me.
I WANT TO BE FLUENT IN THAI. Even if I have no reason to be, and no use for it in my daily life.

this movie is great. Truly New Brunswick horror. It greatly exceeded my expectations, especially in the writing, the acting performances and the music and sound design. I can't wait until it's available online and I can share a link for people to watch it.
extremely excited to see this found footage horror short, Amber Deer, in a theatrical showing next Saturday. It was produced and directed by my former sister-in-law, Amy Stewart and filmed here in New Brunswick, Canada.

Seeing major media outlets list Weapons as the horror movie of the year, above Sinners, has done something to my brain.
It should go without saying that this is not the definition of good art!
This is a recipe for seeming "artsy" and "deep" and "meaningful" while dodging all of the risks and responsibilities of being an artist, in the interest of chasing mass appeal and not alienating anyone.

"Weapons doesn't have a deeper meaning and that's okay" is, I think, a very fair take.
"Weapons succeeds as a good piece of art just by making people wonder whether it has a deeper meaning" infuriates me.
