Great reminder! I know a few scholars, not just in humanities either, who would appreciate this. Plus, opportunities to do small, positive, acts are so valuable, especially now. They uplift the *thanker* too! I know I'm weary from the barrage and hypervigilance it has wrought. Antidotes needed!
Hey! Scholars! If you're using someone's work in your class, sometimes it's nice to email them and tell them, because then they might feel good about their research instead of entirely crushed by the academic humanities' ongoing descent into the grave

Ooooh! As a nightly listener to RNZ from here in Kansas, I've developed quite the affinity for all things Aotearoa. This story and these images are SUCH a treat! Hope to one day visit and see all the birds. Keep fighting for conservation, #NZ !
I said "I love you" to another flightless bird yesterday.

This one was a takahē on the predator-free island of Tiritiri Matangi near Auckland.

After finding this bird on the far end of the island, I lay down in the tall grass and waited. After a while he approached closely and lingered.

I've liked dandelions since childhood and do *not* manage my yard to be rid of them.
Dandelions are compound flowers - each head comprises a couple of hundred tiny florets, each producing a dry fruit (check "achene") with its own parachute. 🪶

Some birds readily eat dandelion fruits - American Goldfinches and Field Sparrows are the only ones I've photographed actually doing this. 🌿

Tumbleweed are an invasive plant that came over with our state's innovative hard red winter wheat pioneers. Now, in an increasingly dry state, they suck water out of the ground and pose a fire hazard! #Kansas
Tumbleweeds can be so bad in Kansas that they bury homes and cause fire danger
Tumbleweeds have taken over the High Plains. They thrive so well that they are part of the culture of the West. But this ample supply of blowing weeds can hurt farm yields, wreak havoc on neighborhood...

I really want a young, local #KC or #KCK firebrand to take this course about #WorldCup . I can't fund an entire scholarship, but will contribute to one. (& have indicated such to the organizer). I do think we need voices asking tough questions beyond the pervasive civic boosterism.
World Cup and Global Politics 101 Interest Form — RESISTANCE STUDIES SERIES
This six-week course examines the 2026 World Cup as a lens for understanding the political, cultural, and economic power of global football.

#Kansas has plenty of these (Osage Orange, Kentucky Coffeetree, Honey Locust). But still, that there exist #AnachronisticFruit gives me the feels thinking about these plants bereft of their long-gone #megafauna.
Hey there, GOURDeous! 🍈🦣 Natural History #ValentinesDay eCards

Many species in the gourd family evolved alongside megafauna like mammoths and gomphotheres. But with the megafauna extinct, the plants produce fruit for animals that no longer exist.

Seriously, why not do a mass effort to pollute Ring video with bullshit. At the very least we glob up their servers. (Said as someone who has never had Ring, despite living in a supposedly "scary" neighborhood. I'm not fucking surveilling my neighbors!) #Ring
You could point an unused ring camera at a screen playing Three Stooges films non stop.

Spying lying spies. Fucking hell!
A Reuters photographer captured this image of a page from Pam Bondi's "burn book," which she used to counter any questions from Democratic lawmakers during an unhinged hearing today.

It looks like the DOJ monitored members of Congress’s searches of the unredacted Epstein files.

Just wow.

#Kansas already only has these 3 rivers open to public access! Fucking hell! I can't stop cursing because #KSLeg does not deserve civility at this point.
A Kansas bill could punish homeless people and make kayaking a crime. To hell with that. • Kansas Reflector
Columnist Max McCoy says the Kansas House bill shepherded by Rep. Bob Lewis is a stunningly shameful piece of legislation.

Last visited in Dec '05 when Ortega was campaigning for his return. He made a stop in Granada. *At the time* I was excited to get a photo of him as a hero of the war. My dad was all, "you're gonna get shot," & I poopooed his concern. I owe him an apology.

We need more veterinarians willing to treat our pet ruminants as beloved family members. We ran into the issue with Catalina and had to be very emphatic that this goat was a pet, and that we expected the same level of care and urgency as our dogs and cats would receive. It was a real battle.
In most of the agricultural world a sheep with a broken leg would simply be put down, but that's not how things work in sanctuary. Our vets felt that with time and work, Dudley could make a full recovery. You believed in him too, sending him get well cards from all over the world!

Let's expose ourselves to positive arthropod stories that stimulate our human urges for caretaking and empathy. I'd like to get to the point where I see spiders and react like I'm seeing kittens. I don't *want* a negative visceral reaction. Exploring is more fun without fear! #arthropods #naturalist

Oh wow. Not sure if I feel better or worse that it's not just a Kansas City illness. Worse, I suppose, bc the vehicle entrenchment is so, so deep everywhere in the U.S., even this Bay Area enclave that looks perfect for bicycling compared to KC.
Happy Monday, folks! I’m at San Mateo City Hall tonight, where the council is set to consider spending several million dollars to rip out bike lanes installed in 2022 in favor of more parking spots for cars.

Yes, really. 🧵

These folks are super dedicated to education and incentives for switching to copper ammo. It took some *nearly* all week to make it home after getting caught up in the winter storm travel snarls.

#BaldEagles are susceptible to mortality from #HPAI. Here's an homage to one 9-year-old female who succumbed this past fall in Indiana. We happen to know about her activities over these past 9 years because she had been telemetered as a nestling by a @consciglobal.bsky.social research biologist. 1/2

Now that all women in Kansas will be in danger of some bounty hunter busting into the bathroom and looking at their genitals, I'd say stay the hell away from this state during this summer's World Cup. #BoycottKansasCity26 #ksleg

Very little if anything seems to have changed on the ground. ICE is still out there terrorizing neighborhoods and trying to disappear neighbors. None of us on the ground are buying this bullshit. We will keep organizing and fighting.
The intense fallout from the killing of Alex Pretti has forced President Trump to publicly change course in Minneapolis.
