Food: "American food" is the punchline to a joke. And it's not like there isn't a lot of excellent food in America, but it is literally a PUNCHLINE.
Oh, but there's a culture where it's even more a punchline: English-Scots-Irish.

Name two American composers. Who are the first two that come to mind?
Probably Scott Joplin and Aaron Copland. An African-American who studied Bach and a Jew who studied with Boulanger in France (and was heavily influenced by jazz.)
This idea of an English-Scots-Irish culture is absolutely absurd.

There's Shakespeare and Milton. Those are culturally incredibly important. But let me tell you something, these White Nationalists ain't talkin' 'bout Shakespeare and Milton. They aren't talking about Purcell or Wordsworth.
They're just talking.

We fought both world wars as a multi-ethnic and multi-culture society (even WITH the segregation of the armed forces.)
The greatest cultural achievements of the US are West African music and an Eastern European Jewish theater tradition mixed with modern technology.

English-Scotts-Irish culture is worth fighting for? What is that culture? Is it music? I mean, how much do you listen to traditional music of the British Isles rather than (say) rock and roll or Viennese music?
Musical theater? That was pretty much invented by Jews on 2nd Ave.
Food? LOL. No.
Yes, that’s why my family left Germany because they really wanted to go to Great Britain and sort of missed it by thaaat much

I need to make an “American culture only exists because of immigrants, people of color, and queer people” sign so I can tap it regularly.
1/3 What Musk is really referring to here is, of course “race” - that construct that served to define the hierarchies of wealth & power structured by modern colonialism. Like other far right racists though, he uses the word “culture” as a seemingly less pernicious synonym.

In cartoon news, Tubi just revealed practically the entirety of the classic Warner Bros/Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network library is coming to the platform this March.

For those who don't wanna visit the bird site, here's the full list of what's coming.

So I was 19 in 1990, and I was slow to get into the alternative/college rock revolution. So I probably spent a lot of 1990 listening to this album from 1989.

“The Love Boat” (on Paramount+) is a glorious comfort watch, along the lines of “Columbo”.
As Valentine's Day approaches, I have a confession.
I recently started watching "The Love Boat" from the beginning. I'd never seen a single episode before and I don't just like it, I love it.

This show has everything! 1/3

I worked for 15+ years as an NYC divorce paralegal & got to know 60 Centre St, where divorce paperwork is filed, like a second home. It’s dank, depressing.

Then I got married across the street and it was like an alternate universe. Bright, clean, joyful. The DMV of Love, my wife calls it.
NYCers: If you've never had occasion to be at the NYC Marriage Bureau when a bunch of couples are marrying, I recommend it with all my heart. It is one of the most joyous things imaginable and an instant reminder that the city is both unbelievably diverse and bursting with hope and optimism.
Everyone in the world comes to get married at the NYC Marriage Bureau. Last week, the Mayor stopped by to officiate a few of those ceremonies.

Thank you to all the couples who shared their joy with us. Happy Valentine's Day, New York.

I love TCM, but I wish they’d cancel Woody Allen like the rest of the civilized world.

One of the alternate titles that didn't stick for the 1981 horror movie 'Dead & Buried' was 'Look Alive.' I think someone should definitely make a new horror movie with that title.
