Get this: the Israeli president’s visit will be so divisive, according to NSW Police, that the appropriate response is to ban all public assemblies while he’s here, rather than, say, him not coming.

What things like the attempted terrorist attack in Perth and Scott's public Islamophobia speak to is the deep social division our governments and media have facilitated by the self-evident hypocrisy in how they've dealt with the past two years of domestic rupture arising from Israel/Gaza.

White racist literally threw a bomb at black people to kill them, apparently not a sufficient cause to have a moral panic, special envoy, national introspection, royal commission, terrorism declaration, new laws, 1,000 op-eds in The Australian. We're struggling to identify why that might be.

Worth the read Australia 👇🏽
Australia’s leaders seem to be hoping the safest Trump-era strategy is to keep our heads down and say as little as possible. Jack Waterford argues that silence isn’t strategy – and that Australians deserve clarity about risk, alliances and what comes next.

Trump fills the great Albo silence
Australia’s leaders are trying to avoid becoming a target in a harsher, more coercive world. But silence and caution can’t substitute for strategy – or for honest leadership that levels with the public.

The term “law enforcement” should not be used by media, except perhaps in quotations. It has sadly become an Orwellian term that is used to magically sanctify violence. Language matters. Be specific. Describe individuals with names and ranks. Say exactly what they did. Don’t repeat fascist hocum.

Gun laws? Who said anything about gun laws?

Read the last few words of the lead: “in a suspected domestic violence attack”. I couldn’t be less surprised.

Any chance we could get some legislation about that sort of hate?

The hate groups provisions in the hate speech bill are deeply flawed. They still exclude advocating genocide from the definition of hate crimes, and they will be open to misuse to target peaceful activist groups because of political influence. They shouldn't be passed into law in their current form.

This deserves extra scrutiny, obviously.
Quite extraordinary, sneaky and dangerous, without including judicial oversight.

Will there be calls for a Royal Commission into Islamophobia?

Will Grant Hackett get involved? Will community leaders blast the Albanese government for not listening to the Islamophobia envoy? Will Pauline Hanson be castigated by Sky for causing this, as Mehreen Faruqi was castigated over Bondi?
On Saturday, an imam and his wife were allegedly victims of a violent hate crime — forced off the road by another car, with attackers then getting out to assault the imam/threaten his wife.

ANIC put out a statement on Sunday arvo, noting rising islamophobia.

The media is just getting to it now.
