5 years since January 6 and Republican leadership still refuses to honor the law enforcement officers with a legally required plaque in the Capitol.

Here’s a replica outside our office.

Proud of those who served, like Sen. Kelly and my dad, who did not seek deferment when he was drafted. My dad fought and almost died in a country a long way from home. Service over self, which our president cannot comprehend in the slightest.
Four generations of my family have served our country. Service is in my blood. The President wouldn’t know anything about that.

I've been thinking a lot about asymmetry in our politics and political discourse. This is a great example.
Speech standards are clearly asymmetric. Edgy left-leading speech can get you fired. Edgy right-leaning speech can get your instructor fired if they give you a poor grade for not completing the assignment.

1/ I think this is it. Important corollary to follow next.
What if none of these things is a distraction from the other things and instead they're all just horrible things

Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

Apt, as Mary Oliver often is.
Ever relevant, this poem by Mary Oliver, especially today.

Cover reveal. It's about how & why colonies/states controlled international & domestic migration until 1888, why in the late 19th c the feds took over, & what it was like for politically disfavored groups to live under that arrangement of power. You can't understand voluntary migration history 1/

Happy new year, friends. I appreciate this perspective, in more than one way.
Our Solar System is orbiting the center of our Galaxy at about 220 km/s so in 2025 we collectively traveled something like 7 billion kilometers across the Milky Way. Once in a while, when you have a moment, it’s worthwhile to take a look around, see where you are, and appreciate how far you’ve come.

What the KENNEDY Center used to be…

Remember that time Aretha Franklin performed at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors, paying tribute to Carole King, who co-wrote “You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman,” and it brought a tear to Obama’s eye and everyone to their feet? And Carole King’s reaction. Wow.

I've thought a lot about this over the past several years. It's one reason education, real education, is so important.

Most unhinged compliment: One student referred to me repeatedly as "the Chuck Norris of p-chem"
The one semester I taught organic chemistry lecture a student came up to me after one class and said I was "Captain Picard, but of teaching organic chemistry".
Forget insults, what’s the most unhinged *compliment* you’ve ever received?

Great thread! Well, not great, but enlightening - I learned something.
And actually--Comet Pizza was a page out of a playbook that started with daycare decades before.

In 1983, a California mom accused her son's childcare provider of subjecting children to Satanic rituals--like flushing them down toilets into secret basements where they were then filmed for porn. 1/🧵
Trump guys are about to Comet Pizza every third daycare center because they think they are all fronts for Somali money laundering. They're only doing this near cities with progressive mayors. This is straight up Government by LibsOfTikTok.

This brings back memories: in college, I basically worked security for one of their concerts, except that I wasn't trained for that and didn't get paid. 1/
Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn’t Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, or Alice In Chains.

I see this on the right - the idea that the existence of foreign academic staff and faculty are evidence of discrimination against natives. It's not discrimination, its selection: academia is a global marketplace, the US is the biggest center of that market. So yes, some foreign talent will win.
Striking nativist editorializing by the federal judge who just upheld the $100,000 tax on high-skill immigrants.

She opines that it’s “troubling” that universities hire talent from abroad at all, instead of only native grads.

Then admits (!) that opinion is irrelevant (So why write it? Venting?)
