Singer, songwriter, poet, painter and author Patti Smith was born Patricia Lee Smith in Chicago, Illinois, on this day in 1946 (December 30)
When Smith was four, the family moved from Chicago to Philadelphia, and then to New Jersey.
Patti graduated from high school in 1964 and went to work in a factory. She gave birth to her first child, a daughter, on April 26, 1967, and placed her for adoption. In 1967, she left Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) and moved to Manhattan in New York City, where she met one of the most significant people in her life, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. She and Mapplethorpe had an intense romantic relationship, which was tumultuous as the pair struggled with poverty and Mapplethorpe's sexuality. In her book “Just Kids”, she refers to him as "the artist of my life." Mapplethorpe's photographs of her became the covers for the Patti Smith Group albums, and they remained lifelong friends until Mapplethorpe's death in 1989. She went to Paris with her sister in 1969, where she started busking and doing performance art, before returning to Manhattan. She provided the spoken word soundtrack for Sandy Daley's art film “Robert Having His Nipple Pierced” starring Mapplethorpe. The same year Smith appeared with Wayne County in Jackie Curtis's play “Femme Fatale” and starred in Tony Ingrassia's play “Island”. As a member of the St. Mark's Poetry Project, she spent the early 1970s painting, writing, and performing. Smith was romantically involved at the time with Blue Öyster Cult’s keyboard player Allen Lanier, and she contributed lyrics to several of the band's songs. During these years, she also wrote rock journalism pieces, some of which were published in Rolling Stone and Creem. Then in 1973 she started assembling what would become the Patti Smith Group, who by March 1975 had started a two-month weekend residency at CBGB with Television, where were spotted by Clive Davis who signed them to Arista Records. >>> Arista released her debut studio LP in November that year, which was produced by former Velvet Underground member John Cale, and is considered a landmark album in rock with respect to the emergence of punk and other underground splinters of the genre. Smith described “Horses” as "three-chord rock merged with the power of the word". The Patti Smith Group produced two further albums before the end of the 1970s. “Easter” (1978) was her most commercially successful record, containing her most commercially recognizable single "Because the Night", co-written with Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen and the E Street Band recorded "Because the Night” for the “Darkness on the Edge of Town” album sessions, but the lyrics were still a work in progress. His engineer, Jimmy Iovine was also producing “Easter” for Patti Smith at the Record Plant in New York, where Darkness was also being recorded. Springsteen told Iovine he had decided not to put “Because The Night” on the album. Iovine: “I said why not give it to Patti. Bruce replied, 'If she can do it, she can have it.'" Smith added her own lyrics, recorded it, and scored her biggest hit single. Later she married former guitar player for Detroit rock band MC5 Fred Smith. They had a son, Jackson (b. 1982), who would go on to marry The White Stripes drummer, Meg White. Through most of the 1980s Smith was in semi-retirement from music, living with her family north of Detroit in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. >>> In June 1988, she released the album “Dream of Life”, then Fred Smith died on November 4, 1994, of a heart attack. She toured briefly with Bob Dylan in December 1995, released the LP “Gone Again” in 1996 featuring "About a Boy", a tribute to Kurt Cobain, and collaborated with Michael Stipe on "E-Bow the Letter", a song on R.E.M.'s “New Adventures in Hi-Fi” which she has also performed live with the band. In the ensuing decades she has continued to perform and record. Smith cites Laura Nyro as one of her influences. Many artists cite Patti Smith as an influence, including the likes of Madonna, Siouxsie Sioux, Michael Stipe, Morrisey, Courtney Love, and PJ Harvey. In 2020, “Horses” was ranked at #26 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2009, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation into the National Recording Registry as a "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" work. “Horses” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2021. In 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She placed 47th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of 100 Greatest Artists published in December 2010.

If your preferred candidate for office does something bad, but you still like them, maybe instead of carrying water for them on the bad thing, maybe just admit it was bad and you wish they’d done something else and say that you’ll be the number one advocate for them to change. It isn’t hard.
