In September or October 1886 Vincent van Gogh wrote to Horace Mann Livens from Paris: "In Antwerp I did not even know what the Impressionists were, now I have seen them and though not being one of the club, yet I have much admired certain Impressionist pictures – Degas, nude figure – Claude Monet, landscape." The photograph of Claude Monet in his Giverny garden was taken by Jacques-Ernest Bulloz in the summer of 1905. The image captures the artist standing by his famous water lily pond, a subject he painted extensively in his later years.

Happy birthday to the great Wendy Carlos, the GRAMMY-winning electronic music pioneer and composer behind "Switched-On Bach," as well as the soundtracks to Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange" and "The Shining."
Bob Moog observed of Wendy (Carlos) that "She really understood instinctively what I was doing right and wrong. In my entire lifetime, I'd only seen a very few people who took so naturally to an instrument...It was just a God-given gift." In turn, she called Bob "an intelligent, modest, and lovable man who helped us define a new medium. I don't know how I'd have been able to start my career if Bob had not been there. And I'll never forget him." Respect to one of the greats on her birthday.

Klinker was banned from working by the Nazis and was interned in Dachau concentration camp for 5 month because she had hidden Jewish friends in her apartment. One of her works was displayed at the "Degenerate art" exhibition. "Interior" (c. 1922), is an oil on canvas work by the Belgian-German Expressionist painter Emmy Klinker (1891-1969). The work depicts a stark, angular indoor scene with two figures. On the left, a woman stands with her hands clasped, and on the right, a man sits slouched on a chair. Between them sits an old, dark potbelly stove with a white bowl on top and a wooden crate nearby. The muted, earthy tones and somewhat distorted figures are characteristic of the German Expressionism movement, which aimed to express emotional experience rather than physical reality. Klinker was a notable artist associated with the "Sturm" gallery and the November Group in Berlin, but her work was later targeted by the Nazi regime. One of her pieces was displayed in the infamous 1937 "Degenerate Art" exhibition, a propaganda show designed to mock modern, abstract, and non-representational art that the Nazis deemed un-German or "Jewish Bolshevist". Shakedown Street is the tenth studio album by the Grateful Dead, released November 15, 1978 on Arista Records. The album came just over a year after previous studio album Terrapin Station. It was the final album for Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux, who left the band a few months after its release
Produced by Little Feat's Lowell George, the album included a cover of the Young Racal's "Good Lovin'" that became a minor FM hit. The album's funky title track drew criticism as an effort at jumping on the disco bandwagon, though this didn't seem to faze the Dead, who played it regularly onstage.

November 15, 1975 - Pink Floyd: "Have A Cigar" b/w "Welcome To The Machine" (Columbia 3-10248) promotional 45 single is released to radio stations in the US.
"Have a Cigar" is the third track on Pink Floyd's 1975 album Wish You Were Here. It follows "Welcome to the Machine" and on the original LP opened side two. In some markets, the song was issued as a single. English folk singer Roy Harper provided lead vocals on "Have a Cigar"; it was one of only two Pink Floyd recordings to feature guest lead vocals. The song's music and lyrics were written by Roger Waters in critique of hypocrisy and greed within the music business. The music is more straightforwardly rock-oriented than the rest of the album, beginning with a churning riff played on electric guitar and bass. The track is filled out with additional guitar, electric piano and synthesizer parts to create a rock texture. "Have a Cigar" concludes with a guitar solo, which is interrupted by a synthesizer filter-sweep sound effect as the music reduces in volume to tinny, AM radio-like levels. Finally, the song ends with the sound of a radio being dialled off-station; this effect is used as a transition to the title track, "Wish You Were Here". On the original recording, the song's lead vocals are performed by Roy Harper. Both Waters and David Gilmour sang the song on separate takes, as well as a duet version but they were unhappy with the results (the duet version has been released as part of the Wish You Were Here Immersion set). Harper was recording his album HQ in Studio 2 of Abbey Road at the same time as Pink Floyd were working in Studio 3, and Gilmour invited him to sing the part. The song is one of only two songs by the band which is not sung by one of their permanent members, the other being "The Great Gig in the Sky".

To Our Children's Children's Children is the fifth album by The Moody Blues, released on November 15, 1969. It reached #14 on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart, and #2 on the UK Albums chart.
To Our Children's Children's Children was inspired by the 1969 moon landing, and the songs centre around the twin themes of space travel and children, with minor-key tonalities and a distinct psychedelic influence. It is the fourth of what are popularly considered the group's "core seven" albums from 1967-72, and as such represents the peak of their career to some. The band found most of the songs impossible to perform live, due to extremely lush orchestrations and a great deal of overdubbing. For this reason their following album, A Question of Balance, was more stripped down and basic in instrumentation. This change only lasted for one album and the next, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, saw a return to their earlier orchestral sound. The Moodies were a prolific lot in the late '60s. This, the post-Denny Laine lineup's fourth album, was the second to be released in 1969. It was the group's most mature, fully realized effort to date, arguably surpassing even the milestone Days of Future Passed in its elegance and vision. The Moodies were always capable of both songcraft and experimentalism, but this was the first time they combined them both successfully. Mike Pinder's dramatically arcing mellotron is the perfectly complement to the group's lush vocal harmonies, which are colored by rich acoustic guitar textures. Things open on a mind-bendingly psychedelic note with the electrical storm of "Higher and Higher," but soon the waters calm. Justin Hayward's brief acoustic ballad "I Never Thought I'd Live to be a Hundred" is among the band's loveliest tunes, and it leads into "Beyond," an ambitious instrumental that is the Moodies at their most progressive. Throughout the album, the mixture of winningly melodic balladry, poignant folk-rock and ambitious prog-rock leanings combine for what is one of the Moody Blues' most satisfying albums.

E Pluribus Funk is Grand Funk Railroad's fifth studio album, released on November 15, 1971. It reached #5 on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart and stayed on the chart for 30 weeks overall.
E Pluribus Funk remains GFR's most politically charged release and incorporated what were previously uncharted territories for a hard rock band on the song "Loneliness," which uses an orchestra to great effect. Both "People Let's Stop the War" (concerning the Vietnam war) and "Save the Land," mixed politics and rock, proving that the band could shed its party-hearty image and get serious when it needed to. It was recorded in 5 days during September 1971 at Cleveland Recording Company Studios.

Having a Rave Up With The Yardbirds is the second American album by The Yardbirds, released on November 15, 1965. It reached #53 on the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart during its 33-week stay.
The album is a mix of US-only tracks, previously released singles, and material from Five Live Yardbirds. The album spent thirty-three weeks in Billboard's Top LPs chart where it reached number 53. Having a Rave Up "proved to be their most durable LP, remaining in print until 1972, longer than any other Yardbirds album on Epic". The album features three songs that were recorded when the Yardbirds were on their first US tour in August–September 1965: "Train Kept A-Rollin'", "You're a Better Man than I", and "I'm a Man" (studio version with Jeff Beck). ("Train Kept A-Rollin'" and "I'm a Man" were eventually released in the UK in 1976–1977 and in February 1966 "You're a Better Man than I" became the UK B-side of "Shapes of Things" – see discography for singles information.) Also included are three previously released singles ("Heart Full of Soul", "Evil Hearted You", "Still I'm Sad"). The second side of the album has four songs (with Eric Clapton, who left the band eight months earlier in March 1965 and is not pictured on the album cover) from the 1964 UK live album Five Live Yardbirds, including the influential "Smokestack Lightning".

lyricist and co-producer of King Crimson's first magnificent quartet of albums: In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands.
Sinfield has done a lot more throughout his career after King Crimson, including work with Emerson, Lake and Palmer and hit singles with pop artists, but it is this magnificent streak of King Crimson albums that Progressive Rock fans remember him by.
