The Magic Mountain Festival, officially known as the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival, is considered historically significant as one of the first large-scale rock festivals in America. It was a prototype for large outdoor music events with multiple acts. Inspired by local Renaissance fairs, the event helped establish the format for future rock festivals, including various stages and vendors. The festival in Marin County is noted as an early major event of the "Summer of Love" in the San Francisco Bay Area. The lineup included notable psychedelic rock bands like The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, and The Byrds, many of whom also played at Monterey Pop. Ticket sales for the $2.00 entry fee supported the Hunters Point Child Care Center in San Francisco. Despite its success, the festival was not professionally filmed and was later overshadowed by the well-documented Monterey Pop Festival. 📷 by Henry Diltz

17th Nov 1973, The Who's double album ‘Quadrophenia’ entered the UK album chart peaking at No.2. One of two two full-scale rock operas from The Who (the other being the 1969 ‘Tommy’).
The 1979 film based on the story stars Phil Daniels, Toyah Willcox, Ray Winstone, Michael Elphick and Sting.

"The Birth of Liquid Desires" by the Spanish Surrealist artist Salvador Dalí. It was painted between 1931 and 1932 using oil and collage on canvas. The work is a striking example of Surrealist art, full of subconscious imagery related to the artist's psychological conflicts and obsessions, particularly sexuality and sexual desire. The large biomorphic structure dominates the composition and suggests various forms, including a violin or the weathered rock formations of Port Lligat, Spain. The central figure is an androgynous creature, which merges the figures of the father, son, and mother in a grotesque dream image. The painting is part of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Italy.

"Live-Evil" is an album by Miles Davis, released on November 17, 1971. It reached two charts in Billboard - 200 Top LP's (#125) and Top Jazz LP's (#4).
Much of Live-Evil was recorded live at The Cellar Door on December 19, 1970, and part of which was recorded in Columbia's Studio B, with different personnel, on February 6, and June 3, 4, 1970. Broken into a group of short studio pieces and four extended live jams, Live-Evil finds Miles Davis going further up the river, into the heart of uncharted musical darkness. In the studio, Miles took simple tone ballads and immersed them in the electrified air that he'd been breathing since In a Silent Way. "Nem Um Talvez" and "Selim" are sister pieces; with Miles' trumpet bathed in Hermeto Pascoal's keyboards and vocal moans, sprinkled with proto-dub percussion effects. The live pieces are another animal altogether. Augmented by John McLaughlin's Hendrixian guitar runs and bolstered by Michael Henderson's funky bass pops, these are blues-tinged tickets to an electric, improvisational nirvana. With room to stretch out in any direction, each soloist develops fluidly within the ensemble, then thrusts powerfully forward. Jack DeJohnette and Airto Moreira hold down the backbeat, shifting it into a multitude of forms; Keith Jarrett fills the down-tempo breaks admirably. But it's Miles and McLaughlin who incite this music to the frenzied riot that is it's true calling. When the time comes and the massive, dark groove descends, it comes with a ritualistic, heretofore-unheard fervor. COVER The album cover was illustrated by artist Mati Klarwein. Klarwein had painted the front cover independently of Davis, but the back cover was painted with a suggestion from Davis: "I was doing the picture of the pregnant woman for the cover and the day I finished, Miles called me up and said, 'I want a picture of life on one side and evil on the other.' And all he mentioned was a toad. Then next to me was a copy of Time Magazine which had J. Edgar Hoover on the cover, and he just looked like a toad. I told Miles I found the toad."

"Seventh Sojourn" is the eighth album by The Moody Blues, released on November 17, 1972. It topped the Billboard 200 Top LP's chart for five weeks, and reached #5 in the UK. to close out 1972.
Two hit singles came from this album: "Isn't Life Strange" (#13 UK, #29 US) and "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)" (#36 UK, #12 US). However, both songs were overshadowed by the re-release of "Nights in White Satin," which had been first released in 1967. Whereas both singles from Seventh Sojourn made the top 40, "Nights In White Satin" bested both, hitting #9 in the UK and #2 in the United States and gaining the highest American chart position for a Moody Blues single. While the Moodies were never exactly a rocker's delight, Seventh Sojourn, the seventh recording with the post-Denny Laine lineup, is perhaps their most ballad-heavy album. Ironically, the album's biggest hit, which would become one of the group's signature songs, was the uncharacteristically uptempo "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band." Elsewhere, appearances are equally deceiving; interpersonal tensions had developed in the band to the point where there wouldn't be another Moody Blues album for six years, but the album is full of slow, romantic musings, not signs of strife. As usual, it's Justin Hayward, he of the silky voice and heart-on-a-sleeve lyricism, who excels at all this romantic balladry, his contributions being the most melodic and affecting. John Lodge's aforementioned "I'm Just a Singer" is far and away the most energetic tune, but it closes the album and doesn't disturb the contemplative mood. Ironically, though the band was coming apart, they were also reaching new heights. Keyboardist Mike Pinder had traded in his Mellotron for its more sophisticated cousin, the Chamberlain, which provided an improved overall sound on Seventh Sojourn.

Teaser is the debut album from Tommy Bolin, released on November 17, 1975. It reached #96 on the Billboard 200 Top LP’s chart.
"Teaser" was released in conjunction with the album “Come Taste the Band” by Deep Purple, on which Bolin also played guitar. Upon its release on November 17, 1975, Teaser received considerable praise from critics. Unfortunately, due to Bolin’s obligations with Deep Purple he was unable to promote the album with a solo tour and sales were affected as a result. This album is cherished by fans for the broad range of styles in Bolin’s playing. The material spans hard rock, jazz, reggae, and Latin music, often blending these styles together within a single song. It is also considered by many to be some of Bolin’s greatest recordings in his short career.

Double Fantasy is an album released by John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, on November 17, 1980. It reached #11 on the Billboard 200 Top Albums chart, and #14 on the UK Albums chart.
Upon Lennon's murder, the album jumped to #1 in the US chart, where it stayed for eight weeks and in the UK, it jumped to #2, where it remained for seven weeks before finally spending two weeks at #1. In 1982, Jack Douglas, Lennon and Ono won the 1981 Album of the Year for Double Fantasy at the 24th Annual Grammy Awards. In 1989 the album was ranked #29 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 greatest albums of the 1980s.

Remembering Jeff Buckley

Jeffrey Scott Buckley was raised as Scott Moorhead and an American musician and singer. After a decade as a session guitarist in Los Angeles, Buckley amassed a following in the early 1990s by performing cover songs at venues in East Village, Manhattan, such as Sin-é, while gradually focusing more on his material. After rebuffing interest from record labels and Herb Cohen—the manager of his father, singer Tim Buckley—he signed with Columbia, recruited a band, and recorded what would be his only studio album, Grace, in 1994.

Originally, Jefferson Airplane was also set to perform, but canceled; however, Grace Slick still attended in support. The Dead’s set featured several special collaborations: Hot Tuna joined them for “Good Lovin’,” Traffic’s Steve Winwood played organ on “Hard to Handle,” and Hot Tuna’s Will Scarlet added harmonica to “Truckin’ > The Other One” and “Uncle John’s Band.”
