Meet Yaa’kub Ira Vijandre. He’s the US’ latest political prisoner.

His detention is designed to send the message that anything noncitizens post in support of disfavored causes can be labeled a deportable threat to national security.

New details about Yaa'kub Ira Vijandre's detention show his posts supporting Palestine and the wrongfully convicted representing, in Homeland Security's eyes, support for terrorism

Groceries are cheaper if you do it the right way. First go to the oval office and give the president a fake award and tell him he's very strong and handsome. He will then call the grocery store and threaten them until they give you a discount. It's called the free market

Great, troubling work by Candice.
From @candicebernd.bsky.social in our magazine: A Texas Observer analysis found since 2021, at least 60 cryptomines have been developed or are under construction in at least 33 counties statewide. Experts worry our grid, and water supply, can't handle the load.

I would like to take this opportunity to get on the record and apologize: I had complained about how every single thing at the grocery store now costs five dollars more than it used to, but I had not seen the latest data from DoorDash's State of Local Commerce report, which disproves that.
At some point embarrassment MUST come

I can just imagine if Tolkien was alive today what he would say to Peter Thiel and Elon Musk. Like, Joyce Carol Oates would be standing on the sidelines, clapping.

Pretty telling that my one reading group that's obsessed with literary fiction book awards has been very quiet since the Booker prize winner was announced. What a disappointing year for that prestigious award.

Whatever bug my mom has, COVID or not, we're quite sure she got it from her last visit to the doctors. She hasn't gone anywhere else recently, and I don't get out much and when I do I mask.

The first time she and I got COVID, she got it at a doctor's office as well. Why don't they require masking.🙄

This article is required reading.

When I was writing my space opera trilogy a few years ago, I decided never to use the word "race" to refer to alien species. I used "species," "peoples," "civilizations," etc.

I've also tried to stop saying "human race" in casual conversation.
The far right is obsessed with Lord of the Rings and Musk keeps posting about "hobbits" because modern scientific racism owes more to fantasy worlds and gaming systems than genetic science, and they see both as effective mediums for right-wing propaganda www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2025/1...

I'm deeply disappointed in an online friend I've known for years because she came across a song on Spotify that she loved, found out it was AI, said she was mad but kept listening to the song. This is exactly what they expect people to do at the end of the day.
So looking at the actual SF chronicle article, the only place this song is accruing notice is on Spotify, which is easily gamed by bots. If I were an AI proponent who desperately needed to boost the validity of my investment, this is exactly what I’d do.

Fun thing about Goodreads' pretty bullshitty Reader Choice awards is there's always a slew of books in the categories I read the most that I hadn't heard of at all before and I'm in 7 reading groups, 2 book discords and watch Booktube videos nearly every day, like where do these books come from?

This is just intentional mass maiming, yes, but also they know that diseases don't respect borders, nationality or political alignment and also, they can mutate if you just let them rampage through a population which is pretty dangerous to you when you're so geographically close to said population?

It's so wild watching a bunch of transphobic boomers take our hormones to save their shitty marriages
for those puzzling out why an administration hostile to HRT for transition is super pro HRT for menopause, their claims that menopause ruins women and marriages seems pretty key
No, menopause does not kill women or cause divorce.

So you relied on psychics, ChatGPT and the fact you're a lawyer's daughter and thought you'd sail through your bar exam. Why do you want to be a lawyer if you just won't do the work that every lawyer in this country has always done to pass the bar?

These dumb, entitled rich people are disgusting.
