#nowreading I’m obsessed with Nicholas Freeling. He’s up there with Chandler and Simenon, imo, but oddly unsung. Very quiet books but intensely atmospheric. ‘Europe in a European idiom’ he once said. This is a 1980’s Henri Castang novel (not as well known as Van Der Valk; similar character though)

Why the USA is stressed: in 1963, poverty was defined as family income < 3x food budget. But costs have exploded since 1963, and food is now 5-7% of a budget including health, college, childcare, housing, etc—a realistic food budget multiplier for poverty is 16x, so families under $130K are poor.

Any Q&A admirers out there? I think it's an excellent late-period Sidney Lumet film. One of my favorite Nick Nolte performances, although it's awfully hard to choose with that guy. He really captures the moral rot that accrues when you are both sadistic and untrue to yourself.

I barely use Gmail these days, but I'm gonna switch off AI, even though Google penalizes users for doing so. Happy to do extra work to thwart these bastards even a tiny bit.
Turning off the AI in Gmail causes your account to no longer slit your emails up through Primary, Promotions, and Social. That's because Google is a petulant little bitch who doesn't like that you told them to fuck off with their bullshit slop scam.
