#nowreading Nicholas Freeling - The Widow

After Freeling killed off Van Der Valk he wrote a couple of great atmospheric novels about his wife - Arlette- and her private detective agency in Strasbourg. This, published in 1978, was first. Quietly brilliant as ever- and dedicated to *Strasbourg* 😂

A bizarre, brief, astonishing period when you could stick BBC2 on at 7pm and find yourself watching Butthole Surfers or Napalm Death or Nitzer Ebb while you ate your tea.
What a show.

A reminder of some of the new books we’ve announced we’ll be publishing in the first few months of 2026. Still more to come (keep an eye out), as well as some of our existing favourites moving into paperback, so there’s plenty to look forward to…

Ha! Men almost always look utterly hilarious after haircuts. Like schoolboys. Completely absurd for at least four days.

I love that someone on @letterboxd.social has made a list of music documentaries that don't feature Bono and that one of the chief discussions in the comments is whether or not they also feature Dave Grohl. letterboxd.com/mrbalihai/li...

I've written about how my troubled relationship with food was helped by "ratting" – the decadent habit of restaurant staff scarfing customers' abandoned food, and one that gives a thrill in the domestic kitchen. The ratter, you see, is hornier than most...

If you're looking for some kind of rock-like constancy in this alarming and uncertain world, then why not buy a copy of the new issue of Viz? It's in the shops today, it was in the shops yesterday, and it will still be there tomorrow.
