It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

A broken water main at Elbow and Heritage means the number 3 is detoured on our quiet residential street. I want to ride it just to see if I can get them to pick me up or drop me off at my front door.

Calgary city council is way off in the weeds on blanket rezoning. Not voting on repealing on blanket rezoning today, but on whether or not to start the process (for March '26 hearing + decision). Repetitive amendments, numerous councillors trying to put their stamp on a repeal. #yyccc

Meant to 311 this as well. Couldn't believe they hadn't gotten to it by this morning. Car lanes were clear so I rode there. More of an inconvenience for the traffic behind me than for me. #yycbike
The rest of the Elbow river pathway from Rockyview to Mission has had some attention. Even sanded around Stanley Park. Riverdale and Rideau roads are snirty.

2 St bikeway had had no clearing whatsoever from 26th to 12 th Ave. 311 already submitted. #yycbike

I'd love to get the contractor that clears the Elbow pathway to look me in the eye and tell me they think they're doing a satisfactory job. Why doesn't the City hold them to a higher account? If you hired someone to clear your sidewalks and they did that kind of job, you would can them immediately.
I'm at the point where I'm ending every 311 request with DO BETTER. #yycbike

Interesting to watch the trends in fitness evolve. About 15 years my gym did a renovation to add cardio equipment. Now it seems a lot of those machines sit idle while the strength training equipment is crowded.

There is a reason this is an "opinion" piece. It has zero connection with reality. CREB just reported supply is up significantly and prices are down 5% y-o-y. Rents have fallen 7% - among the fastest in the country. #yyccc calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu...

Certainly Carney takes this very seriously. I think reducing dependency on the US had more to do with this week's pipeline news than trying to win over votes in the west.
If Canada doesn’t expand pipeline capacity to west coast, Canadian oil exporters will inevitably continue to grow dependence on reexport capacity out of the US Gulf Coast

I think it’s a bad idea to depend on another country to export your product to global markets

🤷🏻‍♂️ Unrelated:
Black Sea attacks getting broader:

“Kazakhstan told Ukraine on Sunday to stop attacking the Black Sea terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, which handles more than 1% of global oil, after a major drone attack halted exports and seriously damaged loading infrastructure.”
