Today #yyccc was told that a full repeal of blanket rezoning puts over $800 million in federal funding at risk, including $251 million in transit funding. In addition, it will jeopardize #yyc being awarded its share of $20 billion in transit funding. We quite literally can't afford to be NIMBYs.

If #yyccc can achieve a 50/50 split between building new homes on the edge of the city & building them within the city, taxpayers are projected to save $16B+ over 60 years. Last year, blanket rezoning brought that ratio closer to balance than ever.

Change is coming to #yyc whether we like it or not. The old way of doing things led to large increases in home prices & rents. As #yyccc moves to repeal blanket rezoning they should be mindful that good politics for today is often bad policy for tomorrow.

Food for thought for @jeromyyyc.bsky.social & the rest of #yyccc as they move to repeal blanket rezoning & shift back to small town style governance where gentle density applications will once again start to eat up time that could be better spent running a city approaching 2 million people:
Since 2004 how many hours has #yyccc wasted debating every secondary suite, duplex & townhouse application? What if housing had been a permitted use this whole time & politicians could have focused their efforts on governance of big ticket items instead?

Whether it's water or transit, serving a sprawling city is pricey:

"If we're to look at housing as a concern, we should look toward the hundreds of kms of new pipes, roads & utilities built to accommodate urban sprawl. This creates a structural problem."

Today #yyccc is learning about the reasons behind the Bearspaw Feedermain pipe break. One key factor is #yyc's urban sprawl & low density growth. This comes as Council looks to repeal blanket rezoning. Will Mayor @jeromyyyc.bsky.social or anyone else on council reconsider their decision now?
January 7, 2026 at 9:53 PM
This week, #yyccc voted to repeal blanket rezoning. Many in favour of repeal said using Local Area Plans to put density next to transit, schools & jobs is a better solution. One day later Council voted down density that conformed to a new LAP & was next to a school & bus stop. 🤔
December 17, 2025 at 6:13 PM
Yesterday #yyccc voted to make homes in #yyc more expensive to buy & more difficult to build. Sadly they also voted to handcuff a zoning tool developers could use to bring proposals that could be considered by the community & Council. This places us on a path to sprawl

Instead of talking about a total teardown of blanket rezoning, #yyccc should focus on a #yycplan rezoning renovation.

We agree with @jeromyyyc.bsky.social that both the provincial & federal governments need to be partners when it comes to operating costs of transit. This week the mayor was taking the LRT down to City Hall & it's great to see he plans to champion further investments

Blanket rezoning was pushed as the defining issue in this election & voter turnout was the lowest in a decade. Polling showed an almost 50/50 split between supporters/opponents. By no means did Calgarians clearly reject blanket rezoning. Modify it, don't repeal it. Everyone wins.
Calgarians clearly rejected blanket rezoning. I work for Calgarians, plain and simple -- not politicians or bureaucrats in Ottawa or Edmonton. I'm pushing for a made-in-Calgary housing solution that reflects our city’s needs, respects communities, and delivers more homes people can afford. #yyccc

We're learning that $129 million in $ for #yyc has been paused due to #yyccc's intention to repeal blanket rezoning. Cllr Dan McLean says he was misled, but requirements are pretty clear. Some form of rezoning is needed. Mayor Farkas should try to replace, not repeal.

As the UCP does a victory lap over housing in Alberta, UCP aligned councillors on #yyccc are getting ready to repeal blanket rezoning, even though it's been one of the key policy pieces that's made it all possible. Yet not a peep out of the UCP asking them to reconsider.
November 23, 2025 at 2:28 AM
It's rare we're in agreement with the Fraser Institute on urban policy however they absolutely nail the reasons why this move to repeal blanket rezoning is a bad idea & goes against the free-market conservative values many pushing it on #yyccc claim to hold.

It's election day. A defining ballot box issue never really emerged during the #yycvote campaign & so it's easy to think this election doesn't matter.

Will Communities First candidates Jeremy Wong & Terry Wong push back against their party leader's new position on Green Line? Or will voters in Wards 4 & 7 be left waiting for a train that will never arrive because the party leader calls the shots?

Last night, Sonya Sharp said she doesn't support either proposed #greenlineyyc downtown alignment & instead wants a SE LRT to nowhere that even the UCP has rejected. Calgarians deserve to know if this is now the official Communties First party position.
