This thread is so important.
It is just too easy for those whose careers are tightly bound up with the reforms of the past 15 years to assume that everything is better, and brush inconvenient truths under the carpet

If you watch the panorama tonight about pet owners paying extortionate amounts for healthcare for their furry loved ones, do bear in mind that it’s basically the American healthcare system but for animals and that it’s what our nhs would be replaced with if certain right wingers had their way.

Important new paper:

"We believe that some methods to teach nonspeaking autistic people to type—long dismissed because they involve the assistance of another person—warrant fresh, unbiased, systematic, and respectful investigation."

Why We Need to Study Assisted Methods to Teach Typing to Nonspeaking Autistic People
At least one third of autistic people have limited or no speech. Most nonspeaking autistic people are never provided alternatives that would enable the full range of expression that speech allows, si...

How to convince UK gov that Bluesky is worth using?

Maybe follow some - or all - of these accounts ⬇️👍🏻
So... I've created a starter pack of UK government organisations currently on Bluesky: go.bsky.app/JHsY1Wz

(Currently includes all those listed under ministerial and non-ministerial departments here www.gov.uk/government/o... - let me know any I've missed, or got wrong)

Impressive level of delusion to think Greenlanders would look at US & think:

“Massive gun violence. Patchy healthcare. Increasingly authoritarian & arbitrary.

Hey yeah, that’s a country we want to join!

They’ll definitely respect us & won’t just mine our natural resources & take the profit.”

My wife asked me this morning what I want for my birthday. Now frantically googling barometer options....
I think we forget sometimes that barometers are miracle machines. It’s not windy yet at home; it is raining but nothing exceptional. Without the barometer, if you were just relying on local observations (like most mariners for most of history) you would have no idea it was time to run for your life.

My daughter’s primary school, for example, sent out a notice to say they were going to stop using their X account for comms.

It’s as simple as that. There are plenty of alternatives.

But even if there weren’t you can’t contribute to that.

Regarding the issue of having hobbies being good for you, I still think that what we are paying too little attention to is people's ability to pursue their interests given their work and family commitments, and for some people their need for support to do those activities.
