Fascinating short thread.

You may think you don’t need to know about the relationship between whales and krill. But you’re wrong. This 2 minute read will expand your thinking.
The global whaling industry experienced a boom c. 1840-1950 as technology allowed whalers to hunt the Southern Ocean around Antarctica.

Under standard models, we would have expected krill populations to have *exploded*.

Instead, they DROPPED exponentially.

Let's talk about the KRILL PARADOX.

This is where British public service is utterly awful. No major private company would accept this without the manufacturer giving major indemnity and liability guarantees.

It’s endemic in the public sector, awful procurement contracting gives substandard products.

A glorious thread on, well, the joys, fury and utter ridiculousness of the law. Loved it. 🙏🏻
So this reminds me of one of my favourite WTF moments in heritage bureaucracy, which was the 2018 archaeological excavations just outside the chapel of St Peter at the Tower of London. nobody could decide who, apart from the king, could legally sign off on the project
…so there isn’t some department that is empowered to deal with this stuff that can just override the inevitable objections, I guess? rough, if so

Fully agree with this from @ivancouronne.bsky.social. If you want a report to recieve media coverage, releasing it during or in the run-up to a major event is one of those ideas that seems good but is actually terrible!

There's plenty of that going on.

Interesting article on the impact of post-Twitter social media fragmentation:

“This strain is not just a personal well-being issue — it shapes the health of scholarly communication. If fatigue pushes people away from informal networks, the ecosystem loses diversity, vibrancy, and reach.”

"Platforms like Twitter (X) offered a vibrant, informal commons: a single, global space where researchers could build reputations, collaborate across borders & participate in real-time scholarly debate ... that clarity has gone. The digital landscape for academics is fragmented, tiring & uncertain."

Almost nothing from No 10 or Govt Comms as a whole. It's beyond woeful.

Meanwhile Reform are holding multiple press conferences a week.
Great read from @iandunt.bsky.social on whether Starmer should stay or go, including the mystery of how, if you’re launching a popular climate, energy, and growth strategy, why wouldn’t you stage a press conference on it?
