Except not really, because it's actually just a big list of Henry VIII powers, pushing all the detail into secondary legislation. Which will doubtless achieve exactly the opposite of the intention of improving accountability. Whither scrutiny of secondary legislation??

This week on #TheLawShow, we talked Law Under Fire with Mark Evans, President of the #LawSocietyofEngland&Wales, and Charlie Sherrard KC - asking whether increasing political attacks on lawyers and the judiciary for doing their jobs could undermine the rule of law and democracy in the UK.

Today, the #HouseofLords published its awaited report examining the state and quality of the #RuleOfLaw in the UK.

The report highlights with concern the weakening of this foundational value, and calls on Government and politicians to take stronger action to defend it.
Rule of law: holding the line between anarchy and tyranny - Committees - UK Parliament
The rule of law in the UK is being weakened, and everyone must take steps to protect it against further erosion, says the House of Lords Constitution Committee.

There are many important recommendations in the HoL report, not least of which is not to be complacent about the strength of the rule of law in the UK.

Have a listen to the show, and do read.

One should always be suspicious when the state resists disclosure of documents.

And one should be more suspicious when the state suddenly purports to agree to the disclosure of documents.

Bluesky tax legal folk:

If an item is designed and used solely by disabled people, does that make it exempt from import tax? (My understanding is that it is).

Item: wheelchair rugby ball

Any tips on challenging the import tax demanded by HMRC to have the item released?

Reeves should risk it all on one last roll of the dice.

Raise income tax, break the triple lock, slay the deficit, spend the money on the things she believes in.

It may not work - but better than waiting for doom to overtake her.

I’ve almost recovered from the annual gut punch that is Remembrance Day and watching senior politicians attending ceremonies - notably those acting ‘for’ those harmed on duty…
