I want to share something I've worked on effectively for most of my life, in different ways.

This vision of a calmer future, and analysis of how we get there, came after working in different sectors, on different continents – and seeing how obvious solutions are not working.

TIL that blood platelets have serotonin receptors, which is why anemia can mimic depression symptoms and that is absolutely fucking fascinating.

[scans Oates' list]

so he's done a favourite book list now [tick], and next it'll be an image of his beloved pet dog but with the Grok watermark visible
The funniest part of Elon spiraling out about this is that he isn’t responding with anything linked to others or relationships, just posting “great movie”
For reference. I might print this out and hang it in my house:

No single US news source is consumed by more than 25% of Americans, whereas 60% of Brits regularly watch/read/listen to the BBC.

A single shared source of truth makes it harder for partisan echo chambers to form, or for divisive narratives to dominate. It’s good for social cohesion and compromise.

Anybody who had a vision to bring American levels of political, cultural and social polarisation to Britain - whether their motive was clicks or cash, ideology, boredom or anything else - would make it their top strategic priority to abolish the BBC, or to damage and diminish it at the very least
Quick thread on the BBC and the political and societal significance of recent developments:

One of the main reasons the UK has historically been so much less polarised than the US, is that Britain has a shared source of information, consumed and trusted by most people regardless of their politics.

'the ridiculous carnival of Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, of all people, admonishing the BBC for its lack of integrity. And they can get away with it, because no-one expects anything from them and yet we expect everything from the people and places who actually give a damn.'

asymmetric warfare
The reaction to the Panorama edit has been nothing short of hysterical. Yes the BBC has some impartiality problems. But its biggest isn't the one you think.

New piece from me.

Remembrance Day is tomorrow

an apt time to dust off those tired 'Britain stood alone' Churchillian speeches against fascism, and spot the actual fascists not defending our BBC
If you've ever needed a reason to rally behind the BBC then this is it.

I think this level of radicalisation should frighten everybody who cares about living in a cohesive society
Fell down a facebook rabbit hole thanks to something a family member shared. Labour should be really concerned, the tone and circulation of posts now has a simialr feel to Conservatives in 2023 but with an added side of far right memes. Facebook worries me far more than X

I did my PhD in molecular and cell biology, with a specialization in genomics and computational biology. As a result, I met many women, postdocs and junior faculty, who had encountered James Watson in person at CSHL. Their accounts all unanimously mentioned having to deal with him hitting on them.
Jeremy, I have followed your science advocacy on this platform with respect, but I find this thread deeply hurtful and sad and I am going to tell you why. While my wife did her postdoc at CSHL, she and our many dear friends had to endure the racist rhetoric of this man, which did constant harm
On one evening, the speakers were divided up and went to dinner parties hosted by some of the wealthy folks who lived around Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island. My dinner was delightful, with good conversation with our host (the mayor of a nearby village), his friends, and some other speakers.

“Since the start of the year, at least 134 unhoused people have died. Only two lived long enough to reach the state’s average life expectancy.

Two died before birth. One was a newborn. Another was 15 years old.”

134 unhoused people have died in CT this year. Here are some of their stories.
Some who were homeless died from the cold. Others died when their cars caught fire, or they were struck by vehicles. Our obits shine a light on who they were.

“In the last year of the Conservative Government alone, 115 prisoners were released in error, including a series of serious offenders.

“At no point did this fact ever make the front pages of British newspapers, or lead news bulletins on the BBC.”

A perfect dissection of Watson individually, but also Nobel Prize Syndrome generally: a pernicious disorder that the patient enjoys while everyone else suffers.
A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death.

Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written."

Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating.
