i think if you want to do movement journalism, you need to do it from the heart, with the intention of finding the soul of the space you’re in & bringing that to the surface - not chasing viral clicks or roaming around waiting for extreme scenes to unfold. i think that is the least you can do.

i think the purpose of covering protests is to tell people who are not there what the space is like & for people who were there, to serve as an archival reference to recall and better understand what they were involved in.

i personally am very disinclined to hop around and prefer to deepen roots in my city because following around people you don’t know very quickly becomes a superficial ‘waiting for something extreme to happen’ type of coverage, which is often just a lot of noise. there’s no heart in it.
