Often, when I talk about improving development speed, I get a lot of mean-spirited comments lecturing me about how output (as compared to outcome) is unimportant and "feature factories" are dysfunctional (that one's true, at least). Speed IS important, though.

Some people constantly whine about how they need to "get it out the door faster, all the while refusing to do the things that will actually get it out the door faster, and also doing things that will get it out the door *slower*, like browbeating the teams or adding "10x" programmers.

While looking to run my apps on a European PaaS, I've found Scalingo, a French PaaS. The documentation is excellent, and I could run a Vaadin/Spring Boot app with a PostgreSQL database in a few minutes. Only deploying an executable JAR requires a few extra steps. Check it out:

In this 3-minute hands-on video I show how we help #Java developers build web apps faster with UI components, the Flow and Hilla frameworks, and the new Copilot assistant.

Weirdly the thing I get the most hate for is pushing back against people who want to make formal qualifications mandator. IMO structured education has a tendency to lure people towards being less self-reliant, which isn't ideal in a field that changes faster than we can write courses. 1/2

The nice thing about having over two decades of experience as a programmer is that I don’t take shit from people anymore, and I still have a ton of empathy for the people who use what I make.

It’s possible to do both. And it’s everything.

1. Impact. How much revenue does my work protect or generate?

2. Quality. Does my work meet or exceed customer expectations?

3. Efficiency. Reward making the right buy versus build decision.

4. Reusability. How do others leverage my work?

5. Supportability. How much work do I create for others?
a question for the people who write code for money:

if you could wave a magic wand and have your performance/promotability measured on any 5 metrics of your choice, what would those metrics be?

At the same time, spreadsheet apps like Excel did not kill accounting jobs - they helped create more

Understand why each happened and you understand how innovation can both reduce and increase employment/jobs
