Middle-aged New Yorker. He/him.
This is only rational in the context in which we accept that travel has a mandatory death toll. I will not accept any statement from an autonomous car company that doesn't come with an answer to the biggest question:

When your technology kills someone, who is to be held responsible? And how?
these comments, in context outside of a fucking popcrave snippet, to me, do not seem at all unreasonable, and seem more responsible than most tech CEO comments i've read in recent years on most topics, though every headline on this is deliberately inflammatory.
Society will accept a death caused by a robotaxi, Waymo co-CEO says
"We don't say 'whether.' We say 'when,'" the executive said.

In fact, I would postulate that if your moral/ethical positions *consistently* align with your own best interests, that is a reason to examine them particularly carefully.
Me. That would be me.
many YIMBYs i know are actually quite explicit about working against their own financial interest

I saw this show, and it's a really fun production with a killer cast! Worth watching.
Tonight at 9pm ET, 8pm CT, the Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night starring Lupita Nyong'o, Sandra Oh, Peter Dinklage, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and directed by Saheem Ali will be on PBS Great Performances.

You can stream at pbs.org/gperf or on the PBS app.

Just want to call out that two of the most energizing American political voices of the last decade have been young, brown, Democratic Socialists from New York City.

The party needs to pay attention.

New York is a nearly impossible city to govern. It's an insanely hard job. Mamdani will screw up, and we'll have to yell at him about it.

But I believe he gives a crap about the job.

And Andrew Cuomo is a vile, racist, homophobic, misogynistic, opportunistic piece of shit.

What if — hear me out, here — supporting trans people, immigrants, and the working class is a *winning* strategy for Democrats?

I'm happy that Mamdani won. But I won't let that get in the way of my celebrating Cuomo losing.

5 minutes after the polls close! Hell yeah.

Terrible job Andy! Enjoy your retirement!

What a schmuck.
Q: It's election day in NYC. Did you vote for Mamdani or Cuomo?

Schumer: "Look, I voted, and I look forward to working with the next mayor to help NYC."

Hey New York! It’s free sticker day!

What? You didn’t get your free sticker yet? They’re holding it for you at your local polling site! Go get it!

As excited as I would be by the open housing, my enthusiasm is tempered by the knowledge that it would all be on Staten Island and the worst chunk of the UES.

If Platner were a generational political talent; if he had a proven record of progressive success; maybe — maybe! — it would make sense to give him the benefit of the doubt.

What I see is a guy with some good opinions, some bad ones, and a demonstrable history of making poor judgements.

One of the most important lessons from decades of design work: if you ask people exactly what they want, and then give it to them, they will often *hate* it.
One of the most important jobs of a designer is understanding that there are some things that everyone says they want, but then absolutely hate if they get it

I realize that this administration is so chaotic and lawless that it's hard to make anything stick, but these extrajudicial murders in the caribbean are truly insane.

Even if we believed the people doing these murders, drug smuggling is not a capital crime! The military is just murdering people.

You simply do not have to hand it to him — Curtis Sliwa has been a bane on this city for literally my whole life. He is a violent gutter racist with the politics of the New York Post on its worst day.

The only good thing I can say about him is that he hates Andrew Cuomo almost as much as I do.

I remember a world where “nazi stuff” was an absolute taboo. Where no American who valued their reputation would have defended it.

Relatedly, I was raised among elders who had survived nazi Germany. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that as that cohort dies out, the taboo is fading.

Someone I loved once taught me about the great evil that could be done by “experimenting” with the education of children. Children who will only ever get one chance at this, who will suffer the effects of your work long after you’ve moved on to the next idea.
This tragic but excellent article needs to be read by everyone throughout the country. The Republicans want to kill public ed. They are using state takeovers and charter school owning charlatans like Mike Miles (and his abusive NES) to do it. See at what they are stealing from our (soon your) kids!🧵
