Norwich Cycling in the 25th Century

So much of our infrastructure, planning, environmental, and road safety measures seem to be based around politicians' fear of slightly inconveniencing easily-angered motorists. Pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users are barely considered in their calculations.

Just heard that Glinner went on Joey Barton podcast. Jesus wept. Don’t let anyone try to convince you he cares about women’s safety.

Needless to say there's a Glow Ride in Norwich!

Bling your bike and come and join us outside City Hall. Gather from 6:30pm, ride leaves at 7pm. Everyone is welcome.

The green cross code is the most disastrous public information campaign in history. It has made generations believe that pedestrians are responsible for avoiding crashes. Crashes are actually the responsibility of the operators of the massive motorised lumps of metal.

The locals of Norwich are upset at the local kids doing a “bikes up, knives down” ride around the city.

Yes many/most where cycling like twats but honestly….so what? If you’re driving just slow down, or stop and let then pass and get in with it

I love the "avid cyclist" types who react to Critical Mass rides by saying, "This is why drivers hate us!"

Trust me, drivers don't need an excuse to hate us. They hate us for existing.

The actual fuck Merseyside Police? "Were you wearing a helmet"? Get fucked with your victim blaming. I can see exactly where you're going to go with that information. It's completely irrelevant for a close pass.

Hold a sign against genocide likely get you worse sentence than this thug got for violent attack on people cycling. Had a cyclist done this to a pedestrian, I strongly feel the biased courts of law would give stronger sentences in years! Again fuck all #RoadJustice!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

fundamentally the problem is that if you think "hotels are where I stay on holiday and I like being on holiday so living in a hotel must be fun and it's not fair others get to do it and not me" then you have the intellectual reasoning of a little child and it's going to be hard to engage with you

7 years later and I still whisper, “We’re disabled, Daniel, not werewolves” to myself like a sacred mantra whenever I see a non-disabled person discover ableism like it’s the latest hipster indie band.

And again, this conversation only comes up about bicycles. Nobody seems to give a shit about how car-centric societies must be for blind people

Every conversation about cycling for transportation almost inevitably boils down to the "That's a whole ass other sentence" tweet

"People should be able to use a bike for reliable, safe transportation?"

"Oh, so you must hate disabled people"

"Where the fuck did you get that from my sentence?"

Related - when motorists say cyclists should pay for the “cycle lanes they want” it’s always a good idea to remind them that the ONLY reason they are wanted or needed is to protect them from the problems and dangers introduced by drivers.

It feels like a protection racket.
Protected bike lanes are car infrastructure. Get rid of the cars instead.
You could jam 4 lanes of sterilized asphalt for cars down this corridor or realize that cars don't need to exist everywhere that people do in order to create sustainable, tranquil, truly livable cities.

Them: "But Jerome, I see empty buses all the time! What a waste!"

Me: "I see empty private cars sitting still taking up public rights of way all the time. Yet no one seems to see how wasteful that is. Imagine what we could do with that space if we gave it back to the people?"

me, a radical: so we’re thinking about installing some speed cameras, banning right-on-red, making some changes to roads that discourage speeding, and maybe installing some bike lanes. y’know, to make the roads safer?

drivers: nah.
