Finished THE LOWDOWN this evening. What a rich, wide show, maybe the best mystery series I've seen in years, with a deep sense of place and character -- and perfectly cast, right down to the cameos. Once you've seen the whole thing, read this lovely @avclub.com interview with Sterlin Harjo.

bumping this; being a parent is not inherently like better or worse than anything else but i still think it's kinda cool that now don't rock the inbox might be the world's only mom-run music newsletter. we'd love to have you as a paying subscriber so we can keep putting out free stuff like this!
while i was in 21 hours of labor on tuesday (...) the posts kept coming :) got the chance to speak with the inimitable and kind James Talley for Don't Rock The Inbox about the 50th anniversary of 'Got No Bread, No Milk, No Money But We Sure Got A Lot Of Love' www.dontrocktheinbox.com/james-talley...

Reminds me of that time "Mosquito Coast," a novel about a crazed character who flees modernity's disposable consumerist culture, was adapted by noted foe of modernity's disposable consumerist culture, Apple.
Edgar Wright's THE RUNNING MAN, released by Paramount, is about why monopolistic corporations, like Paramount, which manipulate the news to support a conservative agenda, like Paramount, are so evil they should be taken down by force.

So support the message by... giving Paramount money?

My review:

Glen Powell is hunted for sport on national television in Edgar Wright's spirited, but tragically ironic adaptation of Stephen King's sci-fi thriller

Shannon is as perfect for this role as he was in "Take Shelter". The "Silence of the Lambs" & "Zodiac" vibes were exactly what came to mind for me as I left the theater.
"The danger is all around us. We are suckers for this charm. It’s going to be our downfall, it seems. We’d rather be entertained than taken care of. It’s tragic, really.”--Michael Shannon
God bless Michael Shannon. '“I’m sure anybody who’s associated with promoting and selling this movie to the world is going to be horrified by everything I’ve said in this interview,” he agrees. “But I don’t really care.”'

1. Watch The Lowdown, one of the best shows I've seen in quite some time.
2. Read Kathryn on The Lowdown, one of the best TV columns I've read in quite some time.
3. Profit.
wrote an essay about the lowdown, and how it can be hard to think about drama at a time when there never seem to be consequences for bad guys, and how the lowdown offers us a way out

I don’t have a whole lot of advice for people younger than me but the earlier in life you stop worrying about what other people will think and just wholeheartedly enjoy the stuff you like the happier you’ll be
One thing people kind of tell you, but not really, about middle age:

One day you'll be like "oh [thing] looks fun but people will think I'm a loser" about a thing

And then you'll say. Wait a second.

Fuck 'em

John Cale has made a record with someone who wasn't even born when he made Songs For Drella, which for most artists would count as a late-career recording, but for him... long may he roll, is what I'm saying.

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Back in the Stone Age (the 90s) I had a column about home video, and I would call stores to tell me what interesting things were being rented locally. One week, my guy at one of the independent stores with a porn room said "I don't have time this week, the Southern Baptist Convention is in town."

Saw Kurosawa's RAN in a sold-out theater, with audible gasps, laughs, and applause in all the right places.

Sitting with a rapt 2025 audience for a 1985 movie that applied feudal samurai culture to a Shakespeare story really brought home the immortality of art in a way I've rarely experienced.

The fact that we won't get Kaleb Horton's thoughts on Warren Zevon finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, by David fucking Letterman is just an absolute tragedy. It's a dark joke that would, in fact, be a punchline of a Warren Zevon song.
