I always thought it was telling that so much of the gameplan was “don’t have JJ do too much.”

And here we are.
Jim Harbaugh is one of the best football coaches of the 21st century
J.J. McCarthy now ranks 851 out of 852 in EPA per Dropback among qualified passers since 2000, per Tru Media. The only player below McCarthy is JaMarcus Russell.

This is a deeply trash way to look at the world and talk about people.

(And betrays an ignorance of quirks of the electoral collage to boot)
Tyson Foods announces that they’ll be closing a major beef-processing plant in Lexington, Nebraska with 3,200 employees.

Lexington has a population of 11,205.

Nebraska overwhelmingly voted for the orange felon over VP Kamala Harris.

I hope they’re enjoying their vote.

This podcast with @stevengodfrey.bsky.social has a fascinating little bit of MAC feelings-ball. A WMU fan asks if his team has surrender to being "fine."

And man, that is the WMU brand. Long-term coaches being fine. That's most of them, outside Fleck, whose tenure in itself was an outlier.

With this, I want to share a small story about Larry's dad. I was at a University of Minnesota football game as a student reporter, and Larry Sr. worked for an outlet up that way.

I remember he rolled into the press box in a Minnesota Wild hockey sweater with "Fitzgerald" on it. Regal stuff.
Since Elizabeth Holmes is back in the news I want to share one of my favorite posts by future hall of fame wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald

For a second, I looked for Wisconsin and worried it would make me sad. But instead Bill took the joyful route and that's great.
At the start of October, I ranked how every P4 quarterback had performed to date. You hated it so much that I had no choice but to do it again.

📈 Julian Sayin, Haynes King, Gunner Stockton
📉 Dante Moore, Carson Beck, John Mateer

Well, @celebrityhottub.bsky.social has me considering if modern gladiatorial arenas would use that system where you text to vote for the song you want them to play but to decide if the gladiator lives or dies. So happy Wednesday to all.

As I sit in the stadium, I think “perhaps this is the moment the Panthers string together several good things and there’s a positive outcome.”

And then …

No one is gonna care because this game is terrible, but Wisconsin getting into field goal range with 17 seconds left and then committing 20 yards of stupid penalties sure was something to behold.

Odd commentary in the Wisconsin game I’m watching where the color guy says there’s no defense for the quarterback run that just happened.

But there was a linebacker who missed a tackle in space, and making that would seem like the defense in question.

Low-key, the advent of the portal and NIL are extra impactful on kickers, because there are a bunch of really good ones getting exceptionally fringy opportunities professionally.
I once saw this man kick, conservatively, 19 field goals against my college football team and almost beat them himself in a year when they won the national championship and I’ve always wondered why he wasn’t in the league
I am happy to inform you the Rams are bringing in Harrison Mevis, The THICCER KICKER

I remember fondly covering a coaching search when someone I knew wrote a column saying it should definitely not be Freeze.

Later that week, they sent me a message saying "Freeze reached out to complain. I said I'd talk to him, and he didn't want to but gave me his number if you need it."
farewell to literally the only person who ever actually fell for “please send all complaints about my performance to @stevengodfrey.bsky.social” in real life

My rule of thumb with Hugh: He was sloppy “cheating” in recruiting and sloppy cheating on his wife.

Pretty easy to see where it would end.

Mmmm. People who want to take over coaching searches are rarely, rarely the ones who are interested in turning away options they want ... but I guess we'll see if this promise has any teeth.
Louisiana governor Jeff Landry on Pat McAfee, on the LSU job:

"Everyone is in agreement in Louisiana, the next coach we hire is going to have a patently different contract. If that agent can't see what's coming down the pike."
