Two babies were born in New York within a year of each other, soon after WWII.

One, Rob Reiner, lived a life of humanity and achievement. He brought us delight and joy. His memory will be a blessing.

The other, Donald Trump, will be remembered as an embarrassment to our nation.

I'm still astonished that it was somehow not newsworthy to the WaPo or NYTimes or any number of other outlets that the father of the alt-right, an inspiration for Dylann Roof's murder spree, had secured front row VIP tickets for Trump's inauguration.

While searching for something else I stumbled upon this fascinating op-ed from Dec. 2015--ten years ago. It appeared in the Greenville, SC Index-Journal. It matter-of-factly pointed out that Trump was beloved by white nationalists like Jared Taylor. This was BEFORE the first GOP primary was held.

Apologies for yet another thread with a hate read of a Douthat joint, but we need to talk about the role the credulous "center-right" is playing in normalizing fascistic illiberalism in the US. Kolvet is a rabid Islamophobe and anti-trans hatemonger, but you'd never know that from this interview.

Despite a number of Republican lawmakers denouncing his remarks, President Donald Trump continued to call actor and director Rob Reiner "deranged" less than a day after his killing was announced.

"[Reiner] was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned," the president said about himself.

This is what asylum practice is increasingly looking like; the Trump admin is moving to "pretermit" every single claim (or nearly every single claim) as a move to avoid having to grant anyone asylum.
I was in a tribunal a week ago where DHS moved to pretermit every single asylum case on "safe third country grounds." Every. single. one.

At one point, a judge scheduled a second master for a man to prove he would be in danger in Honduras. Confused, he said "No, Peru. I'm from Peru."
Immigration judges are "pretermitting" huge swathes of asylum claims on the grounds that the person can be deported to a third country instead — one of the explicit statutory grounds for denying the right to apply for asylum.

This is now happening at large scale nationwide.

Finally, Miller's cousin, Alisa Kasmer, gave us her first interview. It's powerful stuff:

You cannot "combat the dangerousness of the right" by continuing to elevate and legitimate its institutions. In fact, one of the primary ways to "combat the dangerousness of the right" is to say "no, I'm not lending my talents and profile to you; if this is a space for Nazis, it's not one for me"
IMO it's hard to combat the dangerousness of the right by participating in a platform where they aren't present.
I think the best way to explain the X vs Bluesky preference is whether a person thinks the left is more annoying than the right is dangerous.

The reason so many Noah Smiths end up on the X side of that equation is that while the left annoys them personally, the right mostly endangers other people.

Inside Stephen Miller’s Dark Plot to Build a MAGA Terror State
He is descended from Russian Jews—you know, the kind of people who were once denounced as alien and unassimilable. Today, his project is to unleash government persecution of those he deems alien and unassimilable. How far will Miller’s sadistic designs go?

Some news on Trump's doling out of most refugee slots to white South Africans: Two former State Department officials tell us basic protocols designed to determine whether this group actually merits protection have simply been scrapped. It's just whim.
