What the heck is “Western civilization” anyway?

Because the loudest self-proclaimed advocates disdain most Western philosophy, art, culture, institutions, and people. The only parts of Western civilization they seem to actually like are gothic architecture, ancient statues, and Camp of the Saints.

Rod is only interesting in the sense that he spews all of his inner demons onto the page while being unaware of what he is writing. He wrote a whole article about how he had homosexual tendencies but like all men had to be taught to have heterosexual tendencies instead.
rod dreher is not that interesting. he is a guy very clearly filled with self hatred tied to repressed feelings related to his gender and sexuality, and rather than deal with them, he blames “modernity” and “secularism” for why he’s unhappy. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
Rod Dreher Thinks the Enlightenment Was a Mistake
The influential author derides secularism and the modern world. Conservatives—including the vice president—are joining him on a march back to the Middle Ages.

HORRIFYING -
Dismantling USAID & cancelling >80% of aid caused ~750,000 deaths by mid-2025

🧸Most were children
⌛️ Many died within the first year

😰 Preventable deaths were mainly from:
- HIV, TB, malaria
- Maternal & fetal deaths
- Malnutrition

Yes, NBC out-rated us this week, but it’s completely unfair to compare us when one of their anchors’ mothers was kidnapped and none of ours were.

A great book & film. I wrote my thesis on exploring the similarities between it and Black Panther. Specifically how Sam Greenlee & Ryan Coogler approached critiquing the dominant ideology while also making a cultural product they wanted to be commercially successful.
If you’re into books written by people instead of assembled by AI slop, I just finished this one, which is about a Black guy who quits the CIA to train Black freedom fighters in Chicago, and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I've been doing this for the last week and it has improved my experience significantly
Your Bluesky experience will be immensely improved simply by browsing Will Stancil’s replies and blocking everybody being a freak. This takes out like 90 percent of the shittiest people on the site and makes everything better.

Class solidarity is strongest amongst the elites. Tucker supposedly hates Hunter & demonized him nightly on his show yet he felt confident in asking for this favor.
remember when Tucker Carlson asked Hunter Biden for help getting Tucker's kid into college?

The threat to the polls this year is serious, however as others have pointed out ICE & DHS only have so many people. People also don't realize how many polling locations there actually are. I live in Fairfax County, VA which is 395 square miles with a population of just over one million... 1/2

I think it's best for everyone to understand that the unified class project of billionaires right now is to do to white collar workers what globalization and neoliberalism did to blue collar workers.

Helen is going to suggest quotas for the Ivies, probably wants to limit Jews & Catholics attending them too.
We only want the good immigrants who study hard and don't commit crimes, unless they try to take little Brayleigh's (28 ACT, 1350 SAT) God-given slot at an Ivy away by being smarter, in which case Korematsu didn't go far enough

Besides the interview part of this I was just deeply saddened by this line early on in the introduction: "Despite awful reviews, the film grossed an estimated seven million dollars in its first weekend, the best opening weekend for a documentary in more than a decade." We need more documentaries.

I was a 911 dispatcher for six months, I worked 40 hours a week, and I received five calls about one individual during that time, always the same issue. Other dispatchers received calls about this individual during the same time. One regular was Billy Skywalker who called everyday.
Of course it depends on the jurisdiction but most cops spend most of their time dealing with the same few hundred people in a city who are broadly just severely mentally ill and/or on hard drugs that are general public nuisances that the courts refuse to convict and the city refuses to house.

Everyone thinks they're in The Battle of Algiers but they're actually Bob from One Battle After Another laying on his couch watching The Battle of Algiers.
Yep. Our PTA chat is a WhatsApp group so that's where the organizing is happening. The entire point is that we are organizing openly by the thousands, not that we're building secret resistance cells by the 5s and 10s
Multiple people have told me "They should use Signal instead"

Folks.

No one is posting home addresses here.

And "Fed agents infiltrated/subpoena'd the Benjamin Franklin Elementary School PTA discord" is the kind of headline that generates exactly the response in voters that you want

When I was working at 911 I would get at least one call like this a shift. I once had an individual call in because they thought a restaurant wasn't busy enough so it must be a front for selling drugs.
Please remember that everyone you see online or meet on the bus etc. who is telling you about how Tom Hanks has tapped their phone because they've figured out the truth about how he drinks adrenochrome is also sending this to the police, the government, the local news, etc. all the time.

I just finished reading a book on the American founding and lots of people talk about anti-Irish & anti-Italian racism but there were people pre-Revolution who talked about how Anglo-Saxons were inferior to the Normans. It is all about hierarchy with these people, which is made up!

I will say one of the things I miss about D&D is the tactical combat. I'm starting a Daggerheart campaign soon and am sitting here calculating damage tables to get the combat balance just right. I'm really hoping that Daggerheart is just the right balance between narrative & mechanics.

Rod expecting a random nurse to know who he is is almost as funny as him expecting the Pope to know who he is
lol Rod Dreher is ascared of nurses because of Minneapolis. Maybe this will begin his transformation to a full anti-vaxxer!

His guest claimed that it is impossible to determine if systemic racism exists because you can’t have a control group of individuals who aren’t experiencing systemic racism. This is the brilliant mind in charge of deciding which scientist get funding.
Extremely on brand for Douthat to bring on the guy who is demolishing American science research to whine about public trust in science.
