I keep returning to Miyazaki’s response to “AI animation” all the way back in 2016, years before public access/primetime, declaring it “An insult to life itself” within minutes

Struck how the absolute moral clarity of that impression still resonates today, unlike this so called Generative effort.

With how online patching wasn't really a thing back on the PS1, and revisions were usually silent, small details, missed a step upon seeing the transformation this infamous room from the original Resident Evil 1 got for the later Director's Cut release.

“THE NON-ARTIST FIXATION ON HYPERREALISM AS THE PINNACLE OF ART IS CLEARLY PART OF THE REASON SO MANY ADULTS THINK THEY CANNOT DRAW OR CONSIDER THEMSELVES TO BE FAILURES, KAWAII, FOLK ART, DOODLES, OR OTHER EASIER ENTRY POINTS ARE CONSIDERED CHILDISH, WHICH IS WHY JAPANESE DRAWING BOOKS ARE BETTER…”

I was watching a CGI heavy recent movie for about five minutes today, and I suddenly realized that one of the main reasons I can't believe in a movie dependent on CGI is because the "camera", which is nonexistent, does ridiculous things. Some of these movies will do that 10 or even 20 times.

Great article which cuts through the bullshit. Generative AI sleaze is only the latest in a long line of corner cutting, and when the experience you are selling is about making a connection, selling a high quality experience, being authentic? That's playing stupid games with fire

Hey, hey! I've made my @rpgsite.net (and game critic) debut with a deeeeeep dive look at a game I've been anticipating for years: @somethingclassic.bsky.social's Quartet.

How does it compare to recent retro revival RPGs like Chained Echoes, Sea of Stars, and Eiyuden Chronicle? Let's find out.
Inspired by RPGs of the '90s, Quartet is Something Classic's proof that they've grown up and become more confident with age, and that there's room for continued growth to match their ambition. Our review: https://www.rpgsite.net/review/18986-quartet-review

disappointed that game devs are bringing back ps1 and ps2 era graphics without also bringing back fmv cutscenes in wildly different artstyles

Pope Leo wants you to go watch "Angel's Egg" (1985, dir. Mamoru Oshii).
Some inspiring words on cinema in the streaming era from the Pope.

Joe basically exists as a blue force ghost in my head and heart now, but it was nice to see such thoughtful and insightful kindness from Lee about the show this many years on. Feeling couldn’t be more mutual.

The Pope vs. the Algorithm
In his speech to filmmakers last weekend, Pope Leo XIV showed he’s been paying serious attention to the issues facing cinema as an art form.

by which i mean like. souls games and monster hunter games are both rpgs made in japan that have evolved and experimented in unconventional ways and then people just start saying well they're not jrpgs anymore so its like ok this discussion is pointless then lol

jrpg isn't a real genre. its a useful shorthand and comparative term (i.e. if you like tales games you'll probably like falcom games) but when more academically discussing things like whether the genre has "evolved" enough or not it becomes tautologically useless

Loop the dedicated soundtrack in another tab while you're at it imo 👀

This music was composed while looking at b-roll of Phantasy Star Online and reading random articles on Kimimi's blog, and is recommended to be employed in a similar environment.
