I consider myself pretty well informed on the nazi precedents for today, but I didn’t know this one. They truly are just running the playbook.
There is a precedent for a person getting someone else's Nobel Prize. In 1943, the Norwegian writer Knut Hamsun, gave his Nobel Prize in literature to Joseph Goebbels uwapress.uw.edu/book/9780295...
Knut Hamsun
Awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920, Knut Hamsun (1859–1952) was a towering figure of Norwegian letters. He was also a Nazi sympathizer and supp...

Vile shit
One of the stories that makes me the saddest out of this ICE invasion is one out of the Minnesota Star Tribune today about ICE agents eating at a little Mexican restaurant in the small town of Willmar, Minn, —and then, when they were done, arresting some of the workers.

very valuable 🧵 on some relevant history ->
I've seen some folks giving into doomerism by citing the US's history of paramilitary violence shutting down fair elections in the South, and I want to add some historical context to support Jamelle here (as an historian of Reconstruction paramilitary violence)
the question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. how does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms? how does he get the georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince republican house members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?

This isn't just a casual observation. Fascism scholars have long made this point. It's why calling them "weird" was a more effective strategy than talking about the prices of eggs. Fascism is an aesthetic political movement - you need to make people feel embarassed and horrified by it.
one of the most effective weapons we have against fascism is mockery, especially when its really funny
It occurs to me all the yelling at ICE in MPLS isn't merely funny. Getting made fun of like this is awful for morale. ICE is losing field officers faster than it can wave them through training, and a big part of it is how little of this these little weasels can take.

Seeing how strong and close-knit Minneapolis communities are together in the face of all this, it seems clear a great deal of our problems in this nation are because MAGA won’t assimilate into American society

Spotted earlier today while walking to work. It’s not the exact Aladdin Sane bolt, of course, but I’ll call it a sign ten years on. Love on ya.

Verlaine’s archive is going to NYPL, would be great to visit

Patti Smith: “I cannot imagine a more fitting place for Tom’s precious papers than the [NYPL]. There he will be in the company of so many beloved writers from Virginia Woolf to William Burroughs to Lou Reed.” www.nypl.org/blog/2026/01...

okay…”Blackbird” may better without the bird noises.
After listening to Beatles Anthology and box set extras, my ice cold take is this: All the alternate/early versions are interesting and enjoyable. But I haven’t heard one that makes me think, This should’ve been the final released version! Somehow the band and Martin made all the right choices.
