Feeling real deep despair, as a teacher, about how p much every school in the country is encouraging students to use the plagiarism-and-brain-damage dehumanization machines

I was quite enjoying my taxi ride this morning until the driver said he likes watching Piers Morgan. I think my stony face at this revelation worked. He changed the subject. 😄

Absolutely disgraceful. Public health needs a kick up the arse. And don't forget all those politicians banging on about individual rights instead of collective responsibility.
It's official: Canada has lost its measles elimination status because of an outbreak that has persisted for more than 12 months. Country can regain status only if on-going spread is of measles interrupted for more than a year. www.cbc.ca/news/health/... via @cbcnews.ca

Public Health officials and infectious disease experts in Canada:

Take a bow.

You did it.

You've let #measles come back. Andrew Wakefield must be so proud.

You refused to accept #CleanAir recommendations from experts (and non-experts) from outside your insular little community.

Solar’s price drop is astonishing: panels are now 98% cheaper than when I first analyzed them in 2004.

Today, building a fence with solar can be cheaper than using wood.

About 5-7 cm of snow yesterday. Rather less than was forecast, which I am very pleased about.

Tamiya 1/700 USS Fletcher (DD-445). The base is a 3D print. The surface is white glue to give a slightly bumpy surface. Leaving it to dry overnight.

The Bulldog trainer is almost finished. I did not quite pack enough weight into the nose, so it's a tail sitter. Sigh. There's a plastic prop holding it up, which is out of camera!

Happy Women in Physics Day to all of the amazing women and gender minorities in physics!! We are still greatly under-represented at all levels, so we need to continue encouraging girls and young women to consider studying physics and make systemic changes to the climate in the field. ⚛️ 🎢 👩‍🔬 🧪

Yes, some people's legacies are complicated. For example, Watson. After all, though he was racist, don't forget his other traits. For example, he was also sexist. And also anti-semitic. And a data / idea thief. So let's not forget all the different facets.

LOL "princess music". In all seriousness, props to you for exposing your 4yo to my 3rd symphony. It is one of my better symphonies.
I just put on “Eroica,” and 4yo called it “princess music” because “it’s kind of the music you hear at the beginning of the movie.”

We're now at the "Douglas Adams Predicted This" stage of capitalism.
What stage of capitalism is this? I think Marx himself would’ve thought capitalist motherfuckers won’t be this crazy.

Being a veteran educator, I discourage my students from using ChatGPT because it robs them of the ability to think for themselves… they need to form their own conclusions and thoughts.

The process of learning is hard for a lot of people. It’s the work that helps you learn, not the correct answer.
Finally one thing they are, due to being statistical models of text, these neural networks and other large language models are indeed designed to do: milquetoastify boringify language.

The ChatGPT effect: We’ve all started talking like robots
The use of artificial intelligence is leading to a flattening of our language that is evident in the emails we write and the texts we compose. Studies have already confirmed this. Robotic verbiage era...
