Have uninstalled social media apps from my phone for December! I am going to try to be here a lot less and hopefully not at all during school vacation weeks. 💜

1/2 If you know and are friendly with enough writers in your general cohort you will likely know one or two or a few who are "famous" for whatever value of "famous" is relevant to others. None of us knew who was going to be "famous" at the time, we just hung about enjoying each other's company. ALSO
Talking to one of these types at a con who asked how I 'got in' with so many 'famous writers' who I'd been talking to and I said "we made friends before anyone knew who we were decades ago by striking up interesting conversations and enjoying each other's company" and he kept re-asking the question.
They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

I'd believe this anecdote because I've met guys like this at conventions. People do ask (politely) about their work and they can't pitch it because what makes it special is that they are the specialest boy. They go to panels and hear queer and BIPOC writers talk about their work and think "ah ha". +
This shit is made up, actually

A white dude has definitely done this to me, and when he came back to be all "Oh, wow, you're EK Johnston!", he literally blocked me from the person I'd been speaking to.

Yes, of course I hold a grudge.
There is a person who eventually turned out to be an infamous level asshole, but the first time someone introduced me to him I had my name tag flipped backwards so he didn't think I was important and he literally looked me up and down and turned away.

Later he tried to walk that back but you can't.

I really, really wish the year changing could magically change everything, and that we could just turn to the page into a brand new year with all the problems from the previous year left behind (only the day before). Here's hoping it'll happen one of these New Years.

Rick Steves is a good dude
It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Sometimes writing is slap words on the page and reaching your word count goals.

Sometimes it's looking out through your window while sipping tea and asking yourself "man, how do I get out of this one?"

Nuclear winter has all but collapsed civilization. I trudge through the knee-deep snow toward my childhood home, rifle slung across my shoulder. I break the window of my bedroom and climb in. Under the bed is a box covered with a thick layer of dust. I open it. My eyes well; Bluesky invite codes.

Funny animal videos no longer being trustworthy just fucking sucks all around. I love the wonder of animal behavior and what it says about the experience of being alive. It's because it happened in reality that it's so fun. It's not fun if it was just made up. There's no wonder there.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

I agree with all this — sick leave is essential to a healthy society. While we’re working on that, though, we need to make it a general norm that if you MUST be around others while sick, you wear a mask (preferably a good one).
3/ Isolation is important but only works if people can afford it. Many people simply can’t stay home when sick. Without meaningful sick pay, asking people to isolate is unrealistic. Better financial support is essential to reduce transmission.
