4. His ruthlessness as Director of Public Prosecutions sat oddly with his history as a defence lawyer. People remarked on it at the time. Perhaps human rights was not in fact soaked into his fabric, but something else was.
Ambition.
By any means.

The doubling of time to get permanent residency is an amoral act of cruelty against people. The fact politicians like Mahmood think this is acceptable shows why she and those who support her shouldn’t be anywhere near power.

This would make the UK’s scheme the most strict in Europe.

A problem with saying that an infrastructure project is Biden's legacy to you and Gaza isn't is that it's pretty easy to divide one number by another and get something like a human life being worth 2-3cm

There has been a gap between the scale of engagement of hundreds of thousands of people - including those directly affected - and the low national media profile of this debate. The challenges in Monday's Westminster Hall debate were very much informed by MPs hearing from constituents.

Watch the whole thing, think of the absolute gulf between this and the likes of Starmer and Mahmood
Mamdani: "I speak of Renee Good, whose final words to the man who murdered her were, 'I'm not mad at you.' I speak of Alex Pretti who died as he lived, caring for the stranger. ICE shot him bc he did something they could never fathom ... let us offer a new path: one of defiance through compassion."

Direct quote from the Government's own child poverty strategy "We are committed to ensuring that vulnerable migrant children receive the support that they require, regardless of their immigration status."
"Are you worried that there will be an impact on child poverty?"

Home Secretary "This is a system of economic migration ... they chose to bring their families with them" is the underlying principle.

Incredible that the government can say all this yet also be pushing through immigration rule reforms that actively prevent migrants from being full or equal members of the community. Pride might well be necessary. So is equality. Labour used to know that.
The PM says he believes Britain is "stronger as a tolerant, decent and respectful country" while acknowledging that the country has been "undermined by those who seek to sow division". "Pride is the social glue, the force that holds together a community and a country", Starmer is to say (Sky News)

I was at an event hosted and attended by back bench Labour MPs on the gov. Earned Settlement proposals.

We heard from a doctor, lawyer, carer and engineer who face waiting decades for the opportunity to settle in this country because they don't 'contribute' enough.

I'd add that Starmer's Labour are actually (and enthusiastically) building the tools that a right wing government will enthusiastically use to make things *really* bad:

• Mandatory digital ID
• No right to jury trail
• Access to private bank accounts
• Assisted dying (as per the current bill)
The cult of Starmer has a strong presence on Bluesky and they love to tell you that if you don’t support Starmer you’ll get Reform.
Unfortunately all I see is a government paving the way for Reform.

Yesterday, Mahmood justified the Earned Settlement proposal as an 'answer' the public demand to the many people who came after the pandemic. This government has caved in to a conspiracy theory insulting and harming millions. It will ruin lives and make us all worse off.

I’ll have been in country for ten years in August, & should have been eligible for ILR, then citizenship the day after we get married in November. I have paid in the range of £15k in visa fees since arriving, and have been in work nonstop, paying tax.

This fascist dumbass is stealing that.

5 years is not "quite short". those 5 years cost us about fourteen grand, three horrendously stressful applications, and (for example) a full half decade where nobody would offer us a mortgage because my wife only had temporary residency, so we had to keep paying a fortune in rent instead
The Home Secretary several times says she thinks 5 years is "quite short" and "quite quick".

Views differ - but the BSA finds that the general public tend to see 5 years as fair: over 80% of people tend to think 5 years is fair

I’m so angry about Labour’s asylum and immigration reforms. It’s the reason I will switch my vote to the Greens. I have Kurdish and Iranian refugee mates who would have had settled status before the next election had it not been for these reforms and so will be at risk of deportation if Reform win.
