I directed a short film this weekend and it couldn’t have been a more positive experience. I’m so lucky to work with incredible actors and a great crew. It’s been a few years since I directed and it was creatively invigorating. Also, this film will be of interest to comics folks.

A sumptuous drawing by Canaletto of the Piazza San Marco in Venice, c.1745.

I saw an exhibition of the art of Canaletto & his peers at the Queen’s Gallery a while ago. I’m a terrible fanboy when it comes to Canaletto’s paintings. But even so, seeing so many of his drawings still blew me away.

The response has been overwhelming positive for this free script checklist, so I'm sharing again. As a former CE/Script Coordinator/Writers' Assistant/Showrunner Assistant turned Writer, I put together a checklist before sending out your script.

I'm more than happy to share whatever I may know about making a comic with people looking to make their own.
Fuck genAI.

You want to make art and don’t know where to start? Talk to artists. We help each other up. Even if one person’s an ass and says no, there are people who give their advice away free, all the time, to help people express themselves. Talk to people, not a billionaire-backed travesty.

A long-ish thread, but very much worth the time to sit and read it.

There's a lot in it that makes me physically ill to think about, and it should, but the thing that has torn at me A LOT over the last few years is the amount of talent that has been driven out of comics by harassment and abuse.
Here is a thing:

There were several years when I was one of VERY few journalists seriously covering harassment and abuse issues in comics (and by extension sometimes video games). During that time, I became the Person People Told Things To.

Jack Kirby’s Magnum opus. THE NEW GODS. Drew this a while back. Appreciation for everything Kirby was just grows when you try and reproduce even a fraction of his uniqueness.

Yes they fit together.

I really enjoyed Lucas Wars, a graphic novel about the making of Star Wars. Deeply inspiring, showing how a messy, fraught production by a bunch of visionary weirdos made one of the most important movies of the 20th century. And look at the art! So good! 😭

In 1946, cartoonist & illustrator Noel Sickles was sent by Life magazine to sketch the Nuremberg trials. Here is his sketch of the execution of Joachim Von Ribbentrop, who claimed at trial that his boss had made all of the important decisions, & that he was only following orders.
